Question about DOF

I can get great DOF starting at F11 but after looking around at some other peoples work on 500px they are getting as much DOF as I am but at F7.1 and F6.3 with natural light and no flash. The question is how is this possible?

I know what you mean! Sometimes I suspect a little photo-stacking on inert (dead) insects, in order to accumulate DoF not easily captured with a single photo.

ALL of my insects are alive and moving, which prevents focus-shift between sequential photos. I do want to try focus-shift & photo-stacking.

Photo stacking? Isn't that what we did back when we used film? :>)

John Hallmann does focus stacking with insects. His work is on Flickr. He shoots early in the morning, but he lives in Sweden which helps with the cold mornings. Also, many of his insects have dew drops on them. He uses the term "studio focus stacking" for his dead subjects.

Photo Stacking is a high-skill discipline that requires special equipment (i.e. motorized macro focusing rails), and special software (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focus_stacking ).

Here is a GOOGLE search for photo stacking software:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=photo+stacking+software&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=&as_rights=

and a GOOGLE search for photo stacking hardware:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=photo+stacking+software&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=&as_rights=#hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&q=photo+stacking+hardware&oq=photo+stacking+hardware&aq=0K&aqi=g-K1&aql=&gs_l=serp.1.0.0i30.322863.323825.0.326461.4.4.0.0.0.0.151.461.1j3.4.0...0.0.G6Oyh63FQfI&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=8892744266d73b8&biw=1280&bih=520
