someone asked me to take archery pics for an upcoming event. any ideas how to take the picture for the best effects ie arrows in flight etc?

Fast shutter speeds and pre-focusing would be my best guess. Maybe you could get some "safe" posed shots of the archers with their bows drawn and arrows in the targets.

Nope, no apples off my head and I'm not taking any shots from down range and I told them no timer with camera on tripod or remote controls. They were disappointed but I told them they could stand in front of me and take skeet and trap pictures!

You might want to pick up an archery magazine and look for inspiration. It seems that sports photography is particularly prone to faddish style. For example, I was looking at snowboarding photos and multi frame composites are very popular right now. The magazines will make the current fad obvious.
I think facial expressions would be good. Also, in sports, I try to see the sport the way the sportsman sees it and try to capture THAT image. What the athlete sees; not what the spectator sees.

Start very fast shutter speed and tail it back to get an acceptable balance between freezing the action and exposure or acceptable blurring for effect.. Shoot in burst mode. A lot depends on lighting conditions (indoor, outdoor, day, night event etc.). Don't forget your ISO can help you with all of the above.

Hi,
I've been in archery for more than 60-yrs. Shot in quite a few tournaments. Problem is, I was mostly the subject of photos taken by my friends and family. I have to dig out some pics and scan but it would take too long to show you.
