Hi,

We have the big Fresno Fair opening very soon. I would like to enter some of my photo's. In your opinion what type pictures pertaining to subject, etc. do the judges like to see.
Sincerely,

Mary

I assume this is a compitition therefore are there any catagories or themes listed for the submissions?

If not then perhaps anything goes. Remember however a fair is a family friendly event and your photographs should be appropreate for such a venue.

I find judges tend to lean the most on the quality of the work.

You might also check to see if the fair has a web site and if so look for past winners to see what they did.

Hey Mary, Nice to see another Fresnan here. Well, I'm actually a Lemooron, but close enough.

Well - most, but maybe not all fairs group their pictures by subjects such as - people, nature, and so forth. I would ask a few questions as to the operation. Did you go last year, did you see how it was ran, what do you enjoy taking pictures of? Always and forever, contest or not take pictures of what you like.

I just entered my photos in our local county fair on the suggestion of my master photographer instructor. It was my first competition, and all my entries, were rejected with a "no comment" from the judges on the response form. It looks like it is a way to raise money at $50 per entrant, so my suggestion is to into it with guarded ambition.

Thomas art i assume you used photoshop to turn your photos into paintings? I would have to buy your first one and hang it on my wall. I love the pastels and subject matter. Your second one is very well done also. The problem with local contests is the judges know many of thhe photographers and it becomes a popularity contest  My suggestion in no matter what category CUTE trumps everything. Cute dog, cute baby, cute duck, cute car, anything that makes a judge go awe. You can have a landscape shot that would make ansel adams go great job dude, but compared to the cute kid shot you have no chance. cute trumps everything including talent.

Mary, I liked both your pictures especially the colors. I have been trying to learn photography for three years and I am a member of a camera club. Many of the members have been taking pictures for 20 - 30 years. They all dislike images that are manipulated beyond minor adjustments in exposure, contrast, and sharpening. Maybe the judges had this belief.
Personally, I manipulated all my pictures. I have taken on-line course in PSCS3, PSCS4, PSCS5 and Corel Painter X at LVS Online and have learned a lot.
My advice is to keep on with your photography because your pictures are great. PhotoLiz

I too am much impressed. I for one am ready to take notes if you care to share, how you do, what you do so well. As to contests I have always been somewhat leery of the bulk of them - what are their standards, who are they that call themselves judges, and what in the world is it really worth to win or lose. I wish I had more insight into the worth or waste of such contests. This might make a good topic question. Please keep doing what you love and once in a while at least share with us.

Thomasart I thought what would make an excellant subject for your tecqnique. An old fasioned drive in restaurant with plenty of neon and classic cars. I am dying to know how you did it. Those judges were blind idiots. Unfortunately there is still a prejudice against creative photoshoped works. Never mind that its more artisitic and takes more effort. Also never mind in the old days photographes would burn in smudge and alter images with darkroom techniques. Unless you are a photojournalist or crime scene photographer photoshop is allrighr for everyone else. Sorry about the soap box but I really really really LIKEyour work. :D

I have judged and entered photography at fairs. I do it for fun, because a lot of fairs, due to low budgets, are hiring their judges "off the street". (They hired me and I am amateur all the way ) Being in a big city might mean you have more professional judges, but I wouldn't count on it. Remember that photography, like any art form is subjective. Just because one judge does not like your work means nothing. I have found as was stated above that most judges don't like anything that has been manipulated beyond just small amounts.

thats because they are still diehard film users and anti technology. :-( :-( :-( . Never mind the hours of creativity it takes to make one of these versus 2 minutes to shoot a picture of a cute dog. Rember in contests cute trumps everything including talent. I don't shoot cute except with a glock.

Perhaps photographs of this nature should not be entered in photo contest but rather graphic arts contest.
