Grandchildren and photography

My 12 years old grandson is sharp, attentive to details and loves taking photos with his iPhone. I gave him a Nikon P610, a bridge camera, and he's doing well with it.
I want to advance him in learning about photography. What would be good resources for that besides me showing him a few things here and there? I gave him the quick start guide that came with the camera and showed him the user's guide that can be found on Nikon's website. What else will benefit him? Heavy photography books may not be what I think will help him.
Thanks, Sam

my experience with 12 year old boys is that they will devour anything that INTERESTS them. By that I mean that he shows interest in photography, but will become a fanatic about photographing what he's interested in. Sports, tadpoles, flowers, stars, cars, bikes--pedal and motor, colors, textures etc. And feedback from his peer group will encourage him even more so encourage him to post pictures. Find the switch and then monitor him, and showing ways around getting stuck with less that ideal photos because of Auto mode. Then talk about A or S priority, MANUAL, and Post processing. My 10 year old grandson would blow me away in LR and PS. It is all intuitive for them.

Good luck and enjoy the enthusiasm that can only come from a hyped up 12 year-old.

My 3-year old took my cellphone and began shooting in the back yard - unbeknownst to me. My daughter surprised me at Christmas with 3 of the shots mounted! Stunning. One was of me preparing to shoot a bee. Was amazed that he seems to have his grandpa's "eye". Remember Ron Howard's start into cinematography? He took a camera and staged every angle of a shootout on a set, taking pictures throughout, then filmed it. Great example for your grandson to emulate! http://www.emmytvlegends.org/interviews/people/ron-howard

Best wishes for continued success for both of you~

Thanks to all that advised me on advancing my grandson's photography knowledge. It's not a short process but with time, patience, personal example, taking advantage of opportunities it's doable.
