I am posting 2 photos that I printed on metal 24x36. I want to hang them as a pair. Woodstorks is crisp, but the Sandhill Cranes is slightly out of focus. Your thoughts please Hogs. Didn't realize before printed. For future prints, can this be remedied?
Thank you,
Lynn

Doubt it. The interesting thing is that the whole photo is slightly soft, so it might have been camera movement instead of a focus problem. It isn't that bad, and is still a good image.

In similar situations I use the "Sharpen" facility in my post processing program. See if you have that facility and try it.

For future reference, use a tripod. The second photo looks more like camera shake than a focus problem. A good tripod and a remote shutter release, or delayed timer on your shutter, should correct the problem.

Have to agree with the "camera movement theory" . . . but to really know for sure we would have know three things . . . what focal length lens, what shutter speed, and how much of the frame has been cropped away? A hi res of the original image without any adjustments would certainly help here.

It has been my experience that sharpening a soft photo rarely is satisfactory. Sharpening is ideally used sparingly on an already well focused image.

But, again, worth a try.

You should examine your images closely at 100% on your monitor before you print them to ensure they are sharp enough. To ensure sharp photos, pay more attention to technique - use of tripod or high enough shutter speed, precise focusing and enough DOF.

I definitely see some downward camera shake there.

My fault. Too anxious for the shot. Does the slight blur ruin the photo or does subject save it?

A coupla other things to consider. A 24X36" print is very large for a crop sensor camera. And if it's cropped, even a little it magnifies the print even more. If it was cropped the 24X36 could be larger by the percentage of the crop.

To some extent. RAW file might be better.

I took the liberty of doing a little pp in PS. Applied contrast, smart sharpening and shake reduction. Here is the image. Hope you don't mind.
