Margaret Marian McPartland, OBE (née Turner;[1] 20 March 1918 – 20 August 2013), was an English-American jazz pianist, composer and writer. She was the host of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio from 1978 to 2011.[2]

After her marriage to trumpeter Jimmy McPartland in February 1945,[3] she resided in the United States when not travelling throughout the world to perform. In 1969 she founded Halcyon Records, a recording company that produced albums for ten years. In 2000 she was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. In 2004 she was given a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. In 2007 she was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Although known mostly for jazz, she composed other types of music as well, performing her own symphonic work A Portrait of Rachel Carson with the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra in 2007. In 2010 she was named a member of the Order of the British Empire.

Used to really enjoy her show on PBS as she played with so many of the greats. It was always very entertaining.

Never heard of her much over here, but she has certainly played with the best of 'em. I like what I've just heard of her.

I saw her upstairs at The Metropole Café in 1959 sharing a Bill with Buddy Rich. I just happened in and lucked out big time. My ship, the Canadian Carrier HMCS Bonaventure was there for the 200th Anniversary celebration of the discovery of the Hudson River. Also Marion, you might like to know is the only white musician in the famous 1958 photo 'A Great Day in Harlem'

Thanks for posting. An incredibly gracious and creative musician, which put her outside of the mainstream. Not that many women of her time played music professionally, let alone in the jazz vein.

Years ago, when I was a member of the house band for the show that took the place of Garrison Keillor's PHC show, the first time that he retired to NYC, Marian was a guest. Besides the joy of getting to play a couple of numbers with her on the show, I got to talk with her backstage. She was amazed that I knew a tune that she wrote for Johnny Smith, called "There'll Be Other Times." When I told her that John's right hand man for 5 years in his music store in Colorado Springs was Mike Elliott, a fabulous guitarist that lived here in Minneapolis for years, she immediately understood the connection.

Check out this gorgeous tune by Marian, played impeccably by John:

While watching one of your songs, I happened to look over to the right and spotted one of my favorites; Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn. The sing country favorites with banjos. They are one of my favorites next to good old Blue Grass.

Wow! What a memory to savor. Thanks for the link. That was terrific. Johnny Smith is one of those excellent musicians that have slipped below my radar. Since you brought him up why don't you do a posting of some of his work. Mike Elliott too. I had to look him up and came across this

Regarding John, that link I sent is a continuous link, and contains some of John's work. Most interestingly after "There'll Be Other Times," is a very fine version of "Exodus."

Mike landed in Colorado Springs when he was 16, and John took him on as a student. When he "graduated" as a student, John hired him as VP of the JS store, a position which Mike held for 5 years. Mike (rest his soul, he passed on in 2005) was a dear friend and mentor, and was my last guitar teacher before I entered the working world of guitar players. He was head clinician/artist for Gibson, and hired me as the other artist at the time. (I was with Gibson from 1978 to 1981).

I'd encourage you to listen to the solo album you found online for Mike. Excellent work, and you'll hear a definite relation to John's playing. John and Mike were best of friends, and after John mostly retired in Colorado Springs, he stood in respect of Mike's approach. Mike formulated John's concepts into his own vision, some of which is heard on the solo album.

Here are a few Mike Elliott tracks. His writing was as innovative as his playing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRmhSXaws-Q (With an innovative group, "Natural Life")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmzo0hKpH7M (With "Natural Life")

If you want more exposure to "Natural Life" and Mike's work, here's a link to the albums that the group did when it was in existence:

Thanks Mate for that interesting info and the other links. I have been listening to Mike in the background while working on the computer.

Mike may be the best jazz guitar player you never heard of. Unfortunately, after he passed away, his survivors didn't keep the website running, and whatever of his music is left has to be acquired through the internet. If you're interested, I'd look for "City Traffic," "Atrio," or "Diffusion." Those are the three definitive titles for his work, besides his fine solo side. Sometimes vinyl or CD's of those three titles I just mentioned will turn up for sale on the web.
