I am looking at the Canon TI3 and the Nikon D5100, which do you recommend?

Thanks

I recommend Nikon but that's just me. I should point out that I use Nikon and am totally satisfied.

Nikon is a wonderful camera but a Canon T3i is a little less money and can be purchased as a kit with two lens to give you extended focal range for about the same price as a Nikon with one kit lens. Adding a longer Nikon lens to the Nikon D5100 will end up costing you a lot more for the same features and functions than the T3i.

It's totally personal choice.

Personally I bought the Sony Alpha 55 which is in the same category of dSLR. It has image stabilization in the body so additional lenses for it don't cost as much as Canon or Nikon which carry the image stabilization in the lenses. Nikon people tend to stay with Nikon. Canon people do the same. I've been a Sony and Panasonic Lumix person for decades so I stick with Sony, the pioneer of digital imaging, for dSLR purposes. We're all happy campers!

I use the Nikon D5100 and I am very pleased with the camera and the software that comes with it. But it IS a personal thing. You might try renting each camera for a week or two first just to get a feel for each one. After all, you will ultimately end up making quite an investment in whichever one you choose. So why not spend a little more so that you can make an intelligent decision?

I've always been a Canon guy and really, it's 6 to one, half dozen to the other. That said, If I were going to go Nikon I'd go for the D7000.

Not to put too fine a point on it. But the D5100 is essentially a 7000 in a smaller lighter (if somewhat cheaper) body. When you run a comparison on the Nikon site, they're very comparable. But it really is a personal preference thing.

It would seem that the D5100 and D7000 should be about the same price too because the D7000 is discontinued and replaced with a D7100.

Not to nit pick(well, i guess technically I am), But that's like saying the T3i is essentially a 7D in a smaller lighter body. There are similarities, but they are a different class and one is just better.
