My problem and solution with the Nikon D500

Bought a new Nikon D500 last June. I arrived in Florida and put it through hell for two solid months with the Nikon 200-500 mm f5.6 lens. In January of this year during a 1 second 10 fps clip the camera shutter all of a sudden made a different sound and stopped. I looked at the control panel on top of the camera and an ERR message appeared. I was in the field so I turned the camera off for a second and then turned it back on. The ERR message was gone so I stared shooting again. Within minutes the shutter stopped again and the ERR message came back on. The next day the same thing happened so I sent it into Nikon. They promptly returned it and said they replaced the aperture control mechanism. Case closed I thought. The next week, I was out shooting and heard that funny shutter sound and the ERR message was back. So, on the line with Nikon and they emailed me a pre-paid UPS sticker and I sent it in. This week they called me and they said they found the problem, and they were going to replace the aperture control mechanism, and I said "No, you did that the first time and it did not fix the problem, I want a new camera because it appears you don't really know what is wrong with it". Today I got an email from Nikon that said they are going to replace it with a NEW one. Way to go Nikon. The reason I am posting this is because I have two shooting friends down here who have had the same problems with their Nikon D500's. So fellow D500 shooters, if you are experiencing this issue start working with Nikonusa.com and get those D500's send in, be persistent and work with Nikon. Thank you Nikon, you have restored my faith in you. I have been a Nikon shooter since my first Nikon FTN in 1969 and have owned more than 23 Nikon's and not one of them had any problems.

Interesting - good to see Nikon stands behind their products, and one good reason to NEVER buy a grey market Nikon (always USA version in the USA). It amazes me how these high FPS SLRs work at all when you consider all that is happening inside the camera mechanically and electrically with the mirror, auto-focus, shutter, exposure control and aperture stopper.

Nothing compared to a movie camera (like when you shoot at say 500 fps, then the mirror has to flip that many times in a second)!

Most camera companies are doing research on just that. 4K is a start in that direction. I believe within 10 years the expensive DSLR's and mirrorless will shot at close to that and each frame will be about 24-50 megs in size. I believe it is only a matter of time.
