Sony a6300 with Sony 90mm Macro Lens

Has anyone used the Sony a6300 with the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens? If you have used other macro lenses how does the 90mm compare to for example the Canon 100mm macro?

I borrowed for one day the Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens, on my Nikon DX. It gave a FOV of 135mm on the crop sensor. The owner uses it for macro and portraits, I used it for taking some portraits. It's a great lens, but I don't know if it is available in an E-mount, which is the mount for the a6300. Perhaps you have adapters? Top notch E-mount lenses, especially for full frame mirrorless cameras, can be very expensive. Good luck.

I got the 90mm macro for my A6000 recently. I have taken a few macro shots and was very pleased with the results but I haven't really tested it yet. The lens looks and feels very high quality but is pretty heavy even for an FE. It is a bit bigger and heavier than the 18-105mm F4 G lens which is my main lens. The 90mm is fine for hand held, but I am concerned that the lens puts too much pressure on the camera body when mounted on a tripod. That may not be as much of an issue with your A6300 which I think is a bit sturdier than my A6000.
I am looking for a suitable tripod mount collar. Novoflex makes one for e-mount but its over $100. I am hoping to find something that will fit in the $20-$50 range. I would expect that the Canon Macro plus adaptor would be even heavier.

The lens does hunt a bit for focus depending on which setting you have it on. Manual focus is very easy and very good with the switch on the lens.
Its an expensive lens and is much sought after. I went after several used ones on eBay before I got one and only saved about $200 compared to new.

One excellent characteristic of the Sony 90mm Macro lens is the three position switch, which really shortens 'focus search' time with auto-focus. Even at 1:1 or close-up photography, an auto-focus lens does a better job of focusing than my eyes. This third position limits the focus range from about 5-inches to about 10-inches Working Distance, the normal range for macro and close-up photography. Lens nomenclature shows 0.28-meter to 0.5-meter, which is focusing distance, sensor to subject.

Would the Sony 50mm e-Mount marco lens be a better match for the a6300??

The shorter the lens focal length, the shorter the Minimum Working Distance (MWD) to capture 1:1 magnification, true macro-photography.
MWD of the 90-mm macro lens is 135-mm = 5.3-inches. MWD of the 50-mm macro lens is 75-mm = 2.9-inches.
Shooting very small subjects in the field usually requires addition speedlight illumination. That is why Working Distance is important. 2.9-inches is not much space to allow lighting. Even 5.9-inches is problematic.

Excellent point. There are two types of macro photographers: those that use MF only and swear by it-- and those who used to used MF Only and swore by it.

The 50 mm macro (I think it is an FE for full frame not an E for APS-C) is half the price and half the weight of the 90mm. My main concern with the 90mm as mentioned above is the weight on the tripod mount. The 50mm would be more compatible with the A6xxx bodies..

However, many of the user reviews say the auto focus on the 50 mm is very slow and noisy. Also, the 'working distance' for the 50mm may be a bit short for some macro subjects. By all accounts the 90mm is a very sharp lens and a great choice for portraits also.

For someone who looking for a tripod collar for the Sony 90mm macro the Novoflex ASTAX - NEX works great on my Sony 6000. It should work well on any NEX Sony mount.

The Sony 90mm Macro lens is a outstanding lens, will work excellent on the a6300, I mostly use manual focus and in camera magnification to focus but the auto focus works well also, also makes a great portrait lens.

Douglass is right, it takes some getting used to, but once you learn it look out
