Tried searching for previous discussion on this question with no luck. I purchased an M42 adapter to attach my Pentax super takumar 50mm f1.4 lens to my Nikon D7100. I can't get it to work. I can focus on subject but only about a foot away from the lens. Have read many good things about using this lens so I must be doing something wrong. I've tried setting the f stop at different settings. Anyone had success using this set up?
With Nikon, the lens mount flange to the focal plane is about the deepest of brands. Makes it hard to adapt any other lens and make it focus to infinity as the adapter usually shoves the lens even farther away from the focal plane. There are adapters that have a correction lens in them for this, but your very sharp m42 mount lens will most likely suffer a bit.

Thanks for the response. I had high hopes but I think you are correct.
No work around other than to use the adapted lens for close up images. The adapters with optical elements so as to retain infinity focus might give acceptable results for some people, but not me... I went down this road years ago. Get a mirrorless camera to utilize your older lenses. It's what I did so as to be able to use my older Pentax, Leica, Konica, Minolta, Canon et al manual focus lenses again. As for my older Nikon mount & Nikkor lenses, I can use them on either of my Nikon DSLR bodies.....No adapters needed.

You could ask Sharpshooter, but he'd just advise you to dump your Nikon gear and buy Canon. You could send the lens to me, it'll work just fine on my Canon and I even have a spare adapter!
P.S. - Sorry for your issues, I hope you find a solution!
You would still require an adapter in order to use it on your Canon...

Not much hope Peterff. Most suggest an adapter with glass in it. That has to defeat using the lense. I can't afford to switch cameras...heck I can't afford what I have now!! Thanks for your comment.
HERE is one with the correction lens. Supposed to allow infinity focusing and you supposedly get 1.4x magnification. Never used one myself.

Well, I was being a little humorous / cheeky. However, an adapter with an optical element is about the only way to go. However some people find them acceptable.

Why? Even if you could get it to focus to infinity you would need to use it in stop down mode which will make focusing and metering very difficult. I would suggest to find a deal on a Nikon AF 50mm or even a Nikon MF AI/AIS lens at least it will couple to your D7100.

Does it not have an auto feature to stop it down automatically to the pre selected aperture setting when the shutter is released ?
