Just a Murmur......
....ation! This evenings gathering at Shell Bay, Studland, on the Dorset coast. The group has increased in size over the last couple of weeks and numbers are now quite significant - both birds and onlookers. The onlookers are set to increase as the murmuration will feature on national television when Winterwatch airs next week from Arne Nature Reserve (which is close-by, but not actually at Studland!). No composites this time but I did tweek them in Lr.
Beautiful captures of this natural wonder. It must be breathtaking to experience this first hand! I think the way you captured these shots adds to the wonder.
Dave, every one of these is absolutely breathtaking. Huge impact for me. Can't think of a thing I'd do differently, and I'm reminded of Whuff's quote from an instructor, "I wish I'd taken that!" Though just witnessing must be amazing of itself.
I Googled and of course there are You-tube videos too

Seeing the flocks and how they move through the sky is quite impressive and I'm very glad you included this view in your post. That first image, though, has greater impact for me. I think the foreshortening and the colors are quite striking and make a photo that is unusual and very visually appealing. Excellent work.

Exceptional!! Love the background colors and backlit onlookers. All powerful images and altho' I'd be partial to #1 for its color and impact, #2&3 show the cloud appearing pattern of the birds flight and I find that totally interesting.

I'm going to change up he quote that Linda attributed to an instructor I once quoted and say I wish i had witnessed that! You've captured very nicely a wonder of nature here. I recently witnessed a similar phenomenon on a much smaller scale and was fascinated. The silhouette style really shows it off nicely. I'm in agreement with Erich on the impact of #1 which gives the impression that the entire sky is filled with the birds.

Dave, all well captured images. Actually, I'm sort of speechless with these. Love them and can't pick a favorite. Just outstanding !!!

Since it has all been said before, I'll just condense my comment to "Wow"!

These sure are WOW images, magnetoman!!! Both the phenomenon and your skills at capturing it. Now, the birds just have to tweak their synchronized pattern (in the middle image) to make a heart for this upcoming Valentine's Day! :)
What a sight! The phenomenon shown in #2 is exquisite.
Thank you to everyone who has commented, it's much appreciated.
For those standing at the top of the dunes it feels as if you're surrounded by birds - an amazing experience! Photographically, I think my viewpoint is better than being at the top, but I'm a sucker for silhouettes. That first photo is my favourite too.
Not sure they ever make a heart shape Edie, but it's a great thought. They specialise in whale shapes, if you have any ideas??

These are just wonderful! In life they are visual music and as such I usually don't think a single shot (note) of a murmuration works. I think it is your brilliant use of foreground, and the gorgeous light that makes these so successful. Thank you very much for sharing them.

I'm not really into video Phil, so I left that to my wife, who made a good job of it.
Glad you found the stills worthwhile, especially as you would normally have chosen vr for this subject. Many thanks for looking-in.
