Moving LR to a new PC

I got a new PC (Dell XPS 8910) some time ago and took my time moving stuff from the old machine.
My major concern was LR and I asked about it here. The responses were very helpful; the Kost video
was especially instructive. So here's what happened -
1) I installed CC Photography Plan on the new PC w/o problems.
2) I copied over the LR catalog folder to a thumb drive and then to the same location (users/../documents)
on the Dell. This took a long time because I have smart previews but on the plus side I could see my
images w/o moving them yet to the new PC. LR knew where to look as this was the default location
when it was installed. BUT - this took a good chunk of space on the SSD drive. I went to LR help
and the solution was very simple - copy over the catalog folder to wherever you want it and then
double-click the .lrcat file. Voila! LR was launched with the new catalog location. I verified that LR
will use this folder from now on and then deleted the folder on the SSD drive.
3) My photos were on an internal drive (E:) on the old PC; I just moved the drive to the new PC.
Dell refused to name the drive as (E:), it had this letter reserved for a removable media port, presumable
one of the USB port. I had to go and find the new image folders locations in LR (missing folder...). This took
some time but going with "parent folder" helped.
4) I haven't moved yet the external drives where I keep my images' backup but this shouldn't be a major problem.

I hope this may be helpful. It takes time and work but it's really not too hard.

Thanks! If this isn't in the UHH FAQ's, it should be.

One thing that I find useful is to take the data drive out of the old computer and temporarily install it in the new computer. It makes moving TBs of data a breeze. Better than going through a USB3/3.1 PCIe or any other external connection.

When you are done you already have a full backup of your data. Buy a USB3 case for it for around $35 and you are good to go.

Yes, those smart previews take a lot of space and so do the 1:1 previews.

This is a very good suggestion, thanks.

Gene51 gave some very good suggestions.
What you can do to rename the drive to E is first change the drive letters of the removable drive (that is using E right now) so that E is available and then change your drive letter to E.
