Osprey in Mourning Light

All of these were captured on the same day. Started around 8am till about 10:30 am. With the sun and wind to my back all of the conditions were in my favor. I was shooting out of a 14ft canoe. Nikon combo D600 with 80-400mm lens. Took several years to find this location.
Should note, the first photo has been tweaked just a little, the others are straight out of camera.
My point in this post as well is about using light to your advantage. Not much PP needed when shot in the right lighting.

What strikes me about these is that the light plays no part in mood or artistic interpretation. In other words, you don't notice the light per se; it's a supporting player.

Here you have made your choices for the best documentary-type photos you could achieve. In your other thread, you have one where the light is reflected in the water, all those yummy colors + I noted a few with dramatic light on your 500px site.

Are the shots in this thread your favored style, have you changed your interests over the years? (I did see your additional shots and comments to cwilson about gray days in your other thread)

btw, your macro jumping spiders are still my favorites of your work. Absolutely delightful!

Hey Linda, these aren't really a favorite style, just different than before. First you capture the sitting bird, then the flying bird, then the landing bird, then the bird landing with his talons out reached to catch the branch. I've been working on birds capturing fish, but had a very short season due to work this last year.. Will get right on it this year when the Osprey return. I'm just changing as my experience takes me to different places.. I still Love my jumpers and will always find time for them. In fact I spent an hour today shooting them, but no special shots, so nothing to share. I'm also doing more landscapes, but am looking for a specific type and just haven't had the right light and conditions yet. I traveled a over a hundred miles round trip last monday for a shoot and the light was right, but to much wind. I guess my favorite photography is what ever I can squeeze in at the moment...
With these SOOC photos I was showing what to expect with the right light. It's much easier to tweak these into a mood or direction of choice to start with. I hate using rotten apples to make an apple pie..

Very sharp shots. I need to get out to the river to check if the ospreys have returned to their nests from last year.

You have certainly got the birds in quite good sharp focus but in most cases the birds are getting lost in the background. Your probably correct in saying not much PP is required but to really make the grade then this series of shots could certainly benefit from a dash of Photoshop or similar

Yes, SOOC is only the first step. I think all photography can benifit from a little PP

thank you for you canoe and bird searching story. Had you not told it, my assumption was that birding must be easy in Florida. (you just make it look easy). Looks like you had a great time catching them with their wings spread coming in.
