I believe once President Assad reclaims lost Syrian terrority from the rebels the real trouble will begin. He will want to regain the Golan Heights occupied by Israel. On his own that would not be posiblw but he is backed. by Rusia out to ferment as much trouble as posible. Israel is a formidable fighting force and will react fiercely to any attack.Pre Trump they would be backed by the USA but Trump seems to be pro -Russian so may not intervene.
Iran,of course will support Assad as will Gaza. I think Israel is strong enough to win the battle but should tbe odds against them become too great the consequences do not bear thinking about.

This type of issue will show the real meaning of the 'separation of powers' principle in the Constitution. For sure only Congress can raise armys but can Congress over-ride a President as Commander-In-Chief. Were Trump to side with Putin and Assad and Israel to head toward obscurity, might that be held as a 'high crime' (review treaties & history) and lead to Impeachment? When Nixon lied about Watergate that lead to Impeachment - so the bar is not all that high. If 2018 brings a Demicratic surge, a 2019 Impeachment might be a foregone conclusion.
