Quiet Purbeck Sunset

Yesterday late afternoon dog walk on Shell Bay beach. Heavy cloud blanket was not going to produce a spectacular sunset but the glow was attractive, and the starlings coming to roost in the small reed bed made a decent shot, I think? A few moments later the clouds had closed. Any critique appreciated.

A tiny trim all around (or only from the right side) to tell your story just a little more forcefully perhaps? If not, then a little bit of shadow-lifting there?

Great timing on the birds, a well done sense of the moment with that stark tree and pretty sky colors. A scene I would have been very happy to capture.

Most of my attention was directed to the birds. I found a large amount of them were almost duplicated in the spread of their wings and the angle of their bodies to one another. The larger part of them seemed to be choreographed on their performance of flying.

A very interesting scenic. I was thinking about what Linda had thought about some cropping which led me to wonder if a well blended Vignette might help direct the attention of the viewer towards the left of the scene.

Hi Linda, I do have a slightly heavier crop than you suggest, cutting through the body of birds, and almost a square format, that works quite well.

Amazing to watch these groups flying SoHillGuy, they do have it off to a tee! The group here is quite small really, but make a lovely sight. I did try a vignette but wasn't over keen on the result - perhaps I wasn't gentle enough with it.

Thanks for your suggestion and taking time to look.

Hi, Dave,
I like your sunset scene very much, and am much impressed with your capture of the flock of starlings in the perfect spot! my only suggestion might be to brighten the foreground just a bit...really...not much. but It's just a guess and may not improve the image at all.

Good image!

Must admit I couldn't decide quite what to do with the foreground Dave. Lightening doesn't seem right because of the sunset position (it was relatively dark in the foreground), so I very nearly darkened it to a near silhouette, but then left it pretty much as it was! I'll try the tad lighter you suggest to see how it looks.

Probably time to admit I've dropped the near flock of birds in from another frame - they just wouldn't fly where I wanted them. The far flock is original.

Nicely composited; no problem!

I took your image for a ride in Ps and lightened the foreground but can't decide which I like better so I'll say well done as is Dave....I like it.

Thanks Frank. I did lighten it a tad myself as Dave suggested and think I prefer it. Just looks a bit dull as originally posted.

I think it's lovely, as is, though if you wanted to whittle a tiny bit off the right it wouldn't hurt it. I would want to keep the whole flock together in the frame, they are so significant to the composition. The colors are realistic and striking, the tree is beautifully silhouetted (with no halos!!), and the whole composition holds together well. It has that cold/crisp winter feel to it. Well done.

Thank you Min. The shot was taken as a silhouette, hence the lack of halos, and the tree trunks were lightened to suit. It represents the best moment in about a minute of worthwhile light, so I'm pleased enough with it, especially as is taken with the tiniest of my cameras.

Critique? Yes...don't go and muck it up.

Thanks Neil, good advice, it's half an inch off the right hand side, then leave it!
