This race is an 8 stage race through California with 16 pro teams and about 10 Euro teams. First picture shows the main group about 1 1/2 minute behind the break away
Second picture shows the 9 bikers ahead of the big group.
Third picture shows Robert Geesink of the Netherlands, the guy on the right and dressed in Orange/Blue, who won the 8 days Amgen Pro Race.

Looks like it was an interesting day at the bike races. I don't think we have any pro type races in my area, but it looks like it might be fun to try and photograph one day.

I noticed that these kind of races are up because of the increase of the folks along the road. More and more man and women are doing their exercise on a race bike and gaining in popuparity. And let we be honest, Americans needd exercise. I just saw on a food channel that people here in the US are consuming an average of 600 calories too much a day.
An example for you, in the Netherlands are living 16.6 million people and 12.5 million bikes. The most famous bike race is the Tour de France, a 21 days race and millions of Europeans are following it.
I think it is worth paying attention to such an event.

I started doing bike racing in OKC. Check with bike shops for race schedules.
One popular event is called a criterium. A closed course about a mile in length, the riders make several laps, usually on city streets. The category 1 riders are just about as fast as the pros and the colors are just as flashy.

I envy you living in Holland. Bike paths as big a roads all over the place. Went for a two week honeymoon there and rode every day- stopping for apple pie and kaffee along the way.

We had three years of high caliber stage racing here in the midwest: the Tour of Missouri. Alberto Contador, Tom Boonen and my favorite, George Hincappie, among others here. It was rated the #3 racing event in the US. Money was earmarked for the 4th race and the governor cut it out for good.

Thanks for the info Goofy. Turns out they have a big race in Tulsa every year that I didn't even know took place. I will have to look into getting a schedule like you suggested and see if I can make some of them just to see what they are all about and getting pictures can be an added bonus. It certainly looked like everyone was having fun when the news showed the races taking place in Tulsa last weekend.

Great, post some. I'd like to see. Outside corners are always a good place to position yourself. Just be careful and keep both eyes open, that's where crashes can occur...the cat 5, 4 & sometimes junior races especially. Those are the novices and while they may have speed, bike handling skills are sometimes lacking. Is the Tulsa Cup?

Goofy,

It's called the Tulsa Tough. I guess it has been going on for the last seven years now and I didn't even know. Here's a news report from the one of the local news stations. http://www.newson6.com/story/18693467/tulsa-tough-brings-cycling-fever-to-town-this-weekend There are a few other stories and somewhere on facebook they had a guy that was taking pics on his iPad and sending them in. Maybe next year I can make it to some of the races and get some good pics to post.
