Looking for Canon Telephoto

I am looking for a longer reach.
Does anyone have a 100-400mm L ....or perhaps a really nice sharp non-prime lense I would also consider.
I don't think the 100-400mm that I have borrowed was quite as sharp as I wanted, but it could have been that lense and not being calibrated. I am looking for a nice sharp lense.

Or a reasonably priced 300mm 2.8 L , 300 f/4 IS USM... or ...a 400mm f/5.6L USM (don't want beat up and well used)

Thanks,
would appreciate input and leads....thruhiseyes...

I have Canon 100-400. I absolutely love it. I use it the most. I like doing wildlife pics. I think it's sharp.

Hi Thruhiseyes: I think MT Shooter would recommend the Sigma 150-500. I've seem them on line for about $1,000.00. I also think if you check places like KEH who does sell used lenses but also rates then according to condition from "Like New" down to "Ugly" you can save quite a bit of money. All but one of my lenses are used. The one I ordered from KEH was my 70-200 mm 2.8 usm "L" series it was rated EX or excellent. When I got it I looked it over and it looked like new to me. I paid slightly over $1,100.00. There are also other reliable on line companies, such as B&H or Adorama. Hope this helps.

Hi: I own the 100 to 400 canon as other folks have stated it is a great lens. That being said I also own the 300 F/4 and use a 1.4 III converter with this lens. It is tack sharp with or without the converter. I also have the 400mm 5.6 which is tack sharp. My recommendation would be to purchase the 300mm F4 and get the converter.

Does anyone find the 100-400L an OK carry around lens? Is it too heavy and bulky? Is a tripod a must? How about speed for sports action? I'm considering breaking the bank to buy one. Shhh... don't tell my wife!!

I just bought another reconditioned lens from Adorama and I highly recommend them. Excellent communication and fast shipping.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am of the hassy/carl ziess era, so in that I want the sharp images, yet don't want to have to pay the high end price in order to get there.
I certainly would and like the 300mm 2.8 the best, but can't justify that price.
I love the 70-200mm and it is extrarordinary for detail and sharpness of which I use as well as the 24-70mm as my main lense...
I am in an area that I can get a fair amount of wildlife, but don't want to come face to face with a grizzlie....grin....because I dared to get just a little closer..

I have seen really extraordinary...results from both the 100-400mm lense (when used correctly) and have seen very nice images from the Sigma 150-500mm...also...
I am almost committing myself to the 100-400mm from someone I know...so I guess it comes down to if I get it, that I won't be disapppionted in it's results.
I enjoy all that each of you have shared with your images and thoughts of what you like and what you use....thank you so much for sharing with me regarding...

That would be my move as well.

She could check Canon Direct for a refurb perhaps.
