In May, I am taking a trip to the Southwest. I will be traveling through Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma. I am asking for some help on places to visit and photograph in those three states.
I will add a few other states in a week or so for some more ideas.....
Thanks

Go to a website called Roadtrippers.com. You can plan a road trip with a map to show your route and interesting stops along the way, as well as lodging and dining options. Just google roadtrippers.com and set up your trip, quick and easy.
by the way, that would be the south end of the Midwest not the southwest.

Which parts of MS and AR will you be driving through? (Can't help with OK much).

MS isn't very photogenic, but there's a smattering of stuff in the delta, on the coast, and on the Natchez Trace which runs from NE to SW of the state. You're welcome to look over my photos (go to my profile and click Topics Posted, which are usually image threads. Though I post a lot from travels I also post a lot from my home area, such as it is).

Shothotspot is another good resource for photo locations when traveling. http://www.shothotspot.com/

Thanks, that is just the start after Oklahoma we are heading south to New Mexico and Arizona on to Southern California. I want to stay off of I-10 for a while as I will be pulling a 38 foot fifth wheel and word has it the roads are not good on I-10 through Louisiana and southern Mississippi. So we are going to Vicksburg and west from there.

If you are going to New Mexico, visit the town of Columbus just north of the Mexican border. In 1916 Poncho Villa invaded Columbus. That was the last time the United States was invaded in force by a foreign country.

Google has a new app for just that purpose. It tells you what's worth seeing wherever you are. If only I could remember the name of it. "Google Trips"

Mississippi - Sounds like you are switching from I 10 to I 20 in MS, if so you can trundle along the MS coast & see the Old Biloxi lighthouse, take a boat to Ship Island for the day (that's where the good beach is), go to the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, visit the Audubon Center on the Pascagoula River and take a boat tour upriver to look for gators and lots of birds. !-55 or 59 are the quicker ways to get up to I-20 but the Natchez Trace is much more photogenic. Natchez has lots of history from Indian mounds to elaborate antebellum homes, lots to explore. Either way, you'll eventually get to Vicksburg where you should go through the National Military Park (and maybe eat at the Tomato House which is a photo op itself).

Louisiana - if you cross the river on 20, consider a side trip to Poverty Point, a World Heritage Site where a very complex city existed almost 4000 years ago. Traveling further west on I-20 is not something I do much of unless absolutely necessary, since I haven't found much to explore there, but others may have gems for you.

I am not sure about the road conditions of I-10 or I-20, have used both and found neither particularly worse than the other, but you may have some information I don't have. But if you get back to the I-10 in Louisiana, there are wonderful places to visit in the swampy zones over towards Lafayette, and there's always New Orleans! A whole world of exploration in that wonderful old city.

I highly recommend a stop in Natchez. Beautiful town on the Mississippi steeped in history. There are beautifully restored plantation homes scattered throughout the area and the town is a regular stop for river cruises operated by American River
Cruises. Great photo ops!

An addition for the Arkansas leg if you're near: the Hot Springs National Park and Petit Jean State Park (the latter is a real gem for a state park, lots to see and do and photograph.)

NM - definitely go to Santa Fe...the most beautiful sky and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, the mountains, people on the plaza, cathedrals...a photographers paradise. If you have time Taos also, the drive between Santa Fe and Taos through the canyon is wonderful. I'm back in Texas now but lived in Santa Fe for 13 years, can you tell I love it? Planning my own visit there in a couple weeks... :)

Each state has their own website. ALL you have to do is go to each website and look FOR YOURSELF. Trip Adviser is another web site I use all the time, list the state and town you are visiting and it will tell you the TOP spots. A little effort goes a long long way, try it.
