I use Internet Explorer as my browser but I have been having difficulty connecting with it. I fiddled about and got it going but totally without add-ons

Google Add ons, there's a few links explaining what they are etc. Wikipedia is good at explaining. In fact Google [or the net] is great for finding out anything. Just remember to look is the hard part.

Generally, addons should be installed automatically. Try to do a windows update first. Open your Browser click on Safety, then windows update.
Also, do you have the latest Browser version installed...
This link is for windows 7

99% of the time I find Firefox a lot better :-) You can get it here.

I use Firefox exclusively. haven't use IE in years. It has way too much fluff that invariably screws up.

I install Firefox on most of my clients' computers and advise them to use it instead of Internet Explorer. Most of the time, it's more secure (the lead in the security race never stays the same all the time). Firefox allows you to put all kinds of add-ons on. I like NoScript and Flashblock. They both enhance security, and Flashblock replaces all those annoying jumping ads with a box. If there's something I actually want to see, e.g., on Youtube, I have to click on the box. Big deal. NoScript lets me be selective on when I want to allow a website to interact with my system.
There is a ton of other add-ons for just about everything you can think of.
The only clients I don't bug about Firefox are those who have so much trouble interacting with the computer at all that it's pointless to complicate their lives that little bit extra.

I recently downloaded and installed the Google browser called "Chrome" (spelling). It's faster and easier to use.
I don't always use it, going back and forth, but Chrome is certainly nice and importing all your bookmarks is really easy.
Dump IE and use Firefox. You'll be happy you did.
Internet Explorer has too many issues.
Download Firefox...it's free.
I use Firefox on all my PCs, and Safari on all of my Apple gear.
Fewer headaches.
Firefox. I.E. is only needed for certain financial sites. Chrome's good, but I don't like their bookmark sorting. Firefox Rules :)
The battle between Firefox and Internet Explorer has been waged for years. For geeks, a web browser is like a jacket; it isnt just something you use, but also something that identifies you.
Today, the battle continues. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox have had major new releases.
The Firefox button and its associated menu, which includes such wonderful features as the add-on browser. IE9 is still using the clunky Internet Option menu, which at this point feels like an artifact of Windows XP.
Conclusion
Microsoft still has work to do.
