I have 2 x 32GB SDHC cards in my camera.
I have the slots set for backup, writing slot 1 and slot 2 the same, display reads 593.
If I set the slots for overflow, slot 1 fills and spills over to slot 2, does this mean 593 on slot 1 and 593 on slot 2?
Also when I set to slot 1 for RAW and slot 2 for JPG, display reads 419.
Call me stupid but I do not understand the math?
On your first setup are you shooting jpg?

I cannot say about the math, but you should set slot 1 for raw or raw/jpeg or jpeg, whichever you prefer to shoot, and slot 2 for backup. this allows you a greater chance of not losing your photos if something should happen to your main card. under special situations when you want to email or post photos quickly, you may want to set card 1 for raw and card 2 for jpeg. if you feel that you will fill the card before your photo shoot is complete, carry extra cards rather than using slot 2 for overflow. once you lose all of your photos due to a defective card you will understand the importance of using slot 2 for backup.

RAWS are always larger than Jpegs.

If I get 593 RAW with just an SDHC in slot 1 then why should I get only 419 if I put an identical SDHC card also in slot 2 for just JPG?

Unless they changed things in the D7200, it is the same as my D7100. It only reads the primary card. That is card 1.

It might take awhile to figure that one out, but there is no point to trying. What you need to know is that what ever it says, the absolute worst case will not be fewer.
Consider for example that it is remotely possible to engage compression but to find a circumstance where it does nothing... the camera always calculates for that very unlikely set of images that do not compress well. When the card is empty the difference is huge, and gets better as the card fills. When it says just 1 more, you might get 2 or 3.
From Nikon's perspective what must never happen is the camera tells you 100 shots will fit on the card, so you don't take a spare card with you, and then run out of space at only 99 shots. You would blame Nikon, they would have no defense. Instead the worst case is you'll get 101 and Nikon can truthfully say it is your fault, not theirs, if you needed space for 102.

I think its just reading card one. Take the 2nd card out and see what it says.

Your remain shot count indicator only reads the capacity of the card with the least room left on it.
I could be wrong but I have the same Setup on my D7000
Card 1 is set to RAW files
Card 2 is set to JPEG
I am under the understanding that it has to do with file size ,RAW creates much larger files
The number displayed is the tentative fiies on the primary card.
From the owners manual:
If two memory cars are inserted, the display show the space available on the card in Slot 1.
Yes the "s" is missing in the owner's manual!
This is the least useful feature on this camera. My display is pinned to 1.8k shots remaining and it never changes. I'd love to have a hack to see the number of shots I've taken so far instead.
I recently purchased a 7200 and am reading the manual, if you check page 27 of the online manual you will find the information that you need to answer this question.
Not to be a smartass but the best advise I have been given about the camera is RTM. If you need the web address to download it, PM me and I will be happy to send it to you.
Best wishes,
Steve
