It literally took me years to get out of "P" = "Professional" (joke) mode. I have since learned about Basic Daylight Exposure 200 sec @ f/16, ISO 200 for daylight and use it all the time. The only time I resort for Program mode any more is to get an idea of what the Nikon algroythim thinks is an ideal exposure and go back to manual with this as a starting point.

Auto is a good mode if you don't have time (or experience) or you don't know what to expect. Fiddling with setting to get a quick unexpected shot can result in a missed shot. I generally use Aperture.

I mostly use manual in A mode, however I choose sport mode if I'm going to be birding. I can turn my camera on and boom click away and have a photo. I'm 77 and not as steady as I used to be.

I'm afraid to say,.....Have never used auto anything on my cameras over the years,...unless you want to call matrix metering in the viewfinder auto???,.... which to me is just a starting point,....I'm a dinosaur of sorts and have many birthdays to prove it.
