I have traveled on both the Viking Danube trip and Rhine trip. No one used a tripod on either trip.

Well based on many suggestions, I will leave the tripod. Thank you.

We took the viking cruise and there was no room for a tripid most of the time, even at 5:00 in the morning. I took my little Nikon P510 and it served me very well. I did use the long lens extensively as we moved along the river taking shots of people working the vineyards and of castles etc. on the hills.

Based on the popular suggestion not to take my tripod, I have decided to leave it at home. I also decided to bring one lens, a Canon 18-135 lens. Thank you all for lightening my gear.

i would, at least, take a light, small tripod with you. you want to be prepared for any opportunity.

My wife & I have been on 3 river cruises including a Danube Cruise which would be similar to the one you are going on. I travelled with a Nikon D5200 and a Tamron 18-270mm lens. The combination was perfect for all the shots taken and easy to carry around.

When photographing a tour: Write tomorrows destination on a card and photograph it last thing at night. Towns can 'run in to each other' but its surprising how many people you meet later that will tell you that you have named a picture wrong. If using a number of SD cards, number them and use in order too.
Have fun

Thank you Tom. I suppose it'll be raining around this time and the river will be higher causing the boat to be closer to the bridges. Have to think about gear protection, thank you for bringing that up.

Closer to the bridges??

One time in the Lourve, a mother and college-age daughter from the US continually got between me and some paintings of Venice that I was trying to shoot. This aggravated me but I said nothing because they were not being rude, just airheads. Eventually mom asked me how the big sailing ships (in the background) got under the Rialto Bridge. I told her that they had dug the river deeper in that spot to allow for tall ships to pass under it. Daughter got all excited and told mom that she was going to call dad and tell him how much she is learning in Europe and that he should let her go to school there. Mom agreed.

So, the concern about proximity to bridges can be mitigated by only passing under the ones where the water is deeper.

Great idea to take photo of town and date! Had not thought of that!

Here is what I do to make sure I remember where I was when.....

When traveling, every evening, I transfer photos from my memory card to my iPad (you can get the attachment for $29 or $39 at Best Buy). They go to iCloud and they are saved by date. So all I have to do is keep a copy of the itinerary.

This method saved me once, when traveling in New England to see leaves; for some unknown to this day reason, I lost all my photos when I got home....but had them on iCloud!

I have an 18-270 Tamron and a Canon 18-135. I'm leaning towards the Canon. 3 river cruises, Wow! This will be our first river cruise in Europe and if it is as good as I've heard, it won't be the last time. Thank you.

The two lens are perfect. Don't take your tripod, you will not have time to use it.

I have decided not to take my tripod due to popular demand. Thank you.

We took the same trip two years ago, and it's a photographer's dream! I didn't get a lot of use out of my tripod, except from the top deck, as most of our forays into the various cities involved guided tours, cobblestone streets, and lots of other people. Shooting on the top deck, the tripod was great to have. If you go to my website, you'll see some of the shots I took. It's a great trip, so enjoy. One down note: Unless you've bought the trip extension for Amsterdam, don't expect to get much time there. We arrived in Amsterdam around 3:00 a.m. and they put us on a bus for the airport at around 7:00 a.m. For me, that was a bit disappointing.

We bought the Amsterdam extension. Should be able to meander around town. Thank you.
