Windows 10 on my pc. I have indicated in the settings that I want to use IE 11 as my default browser (not Edge for personal reasons) Every time I need to use browser the program asks me to select the browser I want from a selection that is included. Always indicate that I always want to use IE 11 as the default browser .... very annoying!! Any way to avoid this and just default to IE 11? Sometimes Microsoft irates me to no end. Thanks

How about selecting from the default application. I did that when I used Win10.

I blocked edge and cortona from going anywhere using WF.

Windows 10 is a piece of crap if you value your RELATIVE privacy.

I stopped using IE as a browser years ago. There are plenty of alternatives that allow real customization without being as intrusive. I'm with Ron that Windows 10 has it's privacy issues. I'm using a simple free program called Spybot's Beacon" which closes many holes quickly. It's doesn't fix everything but it's a good quick fix. I'm using Firefox now. I've tried Chrome back they love to track you as well. As already mentioned set it in your default programs and your issue should stop.

Here's how:

Press Win+I to open the Settings app and select System. Next scroll down to Default Apps in the left pane and click on it. You will see the list of installed browsers. Click on the browser you want to set as the default browser and exit

Haydon, I had already done as you suggested at the bottom of your reply, EVERY time I use the browser I am presented with a list of possible browsers (chrome, edge, IR & etc) and I am required to choose one EVERY single time I use a browser, plus I always click on the box to use IE as my default browser .... does not work, always get the same message & selection of browsers. Thanks for your reply anyway.

Rongno, I don't understand what is meant by "WF"

WF is windows firewall. Something few folks are aware off. It is quite powerful but a bit arcane when using advanced features.

Run a dos prompt (cmd) then type WF.

When Windows 10 was first issued, it was possible to use any search browser for Cortana. Around 6 months after the initial install, (I did mine within two weeks of it being issued in July, 2015) Microsoft changed the option of selecting a browser and configured Cortana to search exclusively with Edge. Actually, it is convenient for me. I use Chrome as my default. When I use Cortana, it opens on my second monitor. I do not disagree with your privacy assessment. It is just not an issue for me.

Ronboyd, I have done what your information indicates - several times - does not work for me. Anytime I try to open something that requires a browser I ALWAYS receive the popup asking which browser I want to use (chrome, IE & etc) I always choose IE and click the box to make IE my default browser ... this just never works, continue to receive the popup all-the-time! That is that is so maddening .... Edge is a Microsoft product, IE is a MS product - what is the problem? Well, there you have it, my rant for the day - phew

Just a conjecture. Maybe you have a corrupted or incomplete Win 10 installation? It should not be difficult to set default preferences, including a browser. Have you considered reinstalling Win 10?

When my Win 10 installed itself, whether I wanted it or not, it automatically put Edge and IE icons in the taskbar. I've since pinned Chrome down there. I click the browser I want when I want to go online, usually IE. I've always clicked a browser icon to go online so I'm not sure what is meant by "default" browser. Doesn't everyone click an icon, either on the desktop or on the taskbar to go online?

Sounds to me as though you might have a corrupted registry, either with duplicate or garbled keys. Use CCleaner to scan the Registry (not the hard drive) and let it fix any issues it finds.

You may have already tried this but here goes:

1: Click the Windows icon in the lower left
2: Click Settings
3: Click Default Apps
4: Scroll down to Web browser
If anything other than Internet Explorer is selected (If Internet Explorer is selected, see below after #5), click on the icon and then select Internet Explorer.
5: Close out of Settings and you should be good to go

If step 5 shows Internet Explorer as the default, click the Internet Explorer icon and select any other browser.
Close out of settings then redo from step #1 selecting Internet Explorer in step 5. This should take care of your problem.

If I were you, I would use Mozilla Firefox. It is the choice of most computer technicians.

I do not think the browser is the issue. There seems to be a glitch in the Win 10 installation. I think CCleaner may solve it, maybe an SFC scan or a reinstall of Win 10. To perform SFC scan:
a) Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated command prompt.

b) In the command prompt type the following command: sfc /scannow and press enter.

c) After the scan, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Hope the above helps.

I don't think so, I have the same problem. I think MS is either intentionally trying to annoy people want to keep using IE11, or it is just a bug that suits their purpose, so they don't prioritize fixing it. I have done CCcleaner for other reasons, and sfc to try and improve stability (which is still lacking in Win10). No, I'm not going to reinstall Win10 (if I have to go that far, I will reinstall Win7).

I tried Edge, I don't like it. I specifically like having the editable drop down history in IE. But, I have had to get used to using several browsers, because some websites work best with one, and others work best with another.
