The new Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105 1:4 L IS lens arrived on May 10, 2012. Since then I have been shooting in Auto Focus IS mode mostly to get a feel for the camera. Nice!!!! It is the best camera I have ever had. The pictures are outstanding even though I do not know what I am doing yet! (Notice I said Yet). I purchased David Busch's "Canon Eos 5D Mark II" book and am wading through it to see if I can better use the camera. All in All I am very pleased with it so far ... just need to get out and shoot more pictures and practice my photo composition.
Following are a few photos I have taken. Any critic of the pictures would be appreciated ... just be gentle ... I am a "Newbie".

You have a good eye now getting use to your new camera. The last photo looks a little dark some shadow removal in post processing. Enjoy your new camera and keep posting

Looks like your having fun, AND learning fast, Jim!
Keep an eye on your backgrounds. Example: Picture #2 has a sidewalk or something running diagonal through your photo. It's okay...IF you knew it was there before taking the pic. If you saw it for the first time while looking at it on your monitor: Bad Jim!
Just one more thing to clutter your brain with!

Thank you Danilo ... yes I knew the street curb was there and I also know that my compositions are not the best ... learning. Just trying out the camera ... really awesome piece of equipment.

Yeah!! Don't you just LOVE that camera?

It's one amzazing camera for the money.

I've shot up to 12,500 ISO before and got "usable" shots.

I routinely shoot at ISO 3200 and get shots as clean as can be.

Those shots above are pretty good for a start...good going!

True,
And might I suggest you join Flickr?

You can display your shots and you can also become a member of various "groups" that share your interests and have your gear...For example; I'm a member of the Canon EOS 5D mark II group where people post shots taken with that camera.

They also have groups for your lens, you can show off your shots and see what others are doing and ask specific questions....it's a great place for socalizing and talking about your common interests.

I think that for 99% of shooting, you'll continue to keep the auto focus on, and likely 75% or more of the shots will be with IS on too.
I am jealous of your new camera, but I'm doing pretty good with my older model. I recommend going onto youtube.com and doing a search for dslr just to see how many videos they have that are "how to" videos on using a camera like your's. Lots of free information and although I would still read the book you have, it's nice to have videos to watch and learn from as well.
