Problem with NEF (RAW)

Background: For a few years I’ve been using a D7000 with a SanDisk Ultra card, the editor CaptureNX2, and ViewNX2. No problems. Now I can open NEF (RAW) photos made in the past, no problem. But I have a new problem -- Yesterday I shot 8 photos in NEF, camera set to RAW only, then downloaded with browser ViewNX2. I could see the 8 NEFS along with the previous 7 NEFS recorded on the card. I was able to enlarge each individual to full size. Then I shifted the 15 NEFs to CaptureNX2 for editing. To my surprise, I was unable to open any of the 15 NEFs on the card in NX2. I noticed that the photos have about 20 MB while in ViewNX2, but in CaptureNX2 they all have 0 Bytes. Where did the photos disappear? There is a message offered to me saying that I cannot load the file. Not helpful.

I used a second SD card: two series of shots: first camera set to RAW only, second set to RAW + JPEG. In both cases NEF(RAW) and JPEGs appeared in ViewNX2 as they should. But only JPEGs transferred properly to CaptureNX2 for editing. NEFs would not transfer and open as before.
Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Thanks for response cfbudd. Can you tell me why my current software on disk is no longer working? Has Nikon somehow for some reason changed the NEF file, thus requiring new software? Is this change explained anywhere?

I have no clue, but I noticed you are using outdated software. Obviously the D7000 NEF file could no longer be read by the older software??? If I had the problem and the new software solved it, I would conclude it's a software problem. I seem to remember some issues here on UHH regarding reading NEF files from newer cameras with View-NX.

Oh, you could read the file in View-NX but couldn't open it in CaptureNX2. Try the latest version.

I have a D7000 and I use the same software packages. I don't understand why you were able to open the RAW files from the D7000 in the past but not now. Is it possible that Capture NX-2 has become corrupted on your computer? The last version of Capture NX-2 was version 2.4.7. Try downloading it from Nikon's website.

Capture NX2 is no longer viable with newer caneras - When Google bought Nik that ended NX2

No, you have another problem, the file size is a clue. Even if the image isn't viewable/supported, the files size should NOT be 0.

Do you re-format your card after each "Download" ? ie; I empty my cards onto another drive, then reformat the card after i reinsert it- every single time!.

Re formatting, scans the card and avoids bad sectors. All cards have bad sectors- no matter the make or quality- some are never good from day of manufacture. In fact all hard drives do too, there is no perfect memory device... (including your or my brain LOL ). So formatting the card maps and avoids these bad sectors. Bad sectors can form over time, either by physical damage, electrical or even wear out- there is a life span. If you re-format every time, you have a card which is using only its good sectors. Any bit of a series or images that is damaged, can throw the whole card off, especially if the "directory" becomes damaged ( A bit of the software of the card that keeps track of everything on it- without this- all you have is a bunch of "0's" and "1's" ).

So do this. Re-format and test- maybe you zapped the card with a spark, or something spilled in it, or it got bent, or it simply went bad... look it over very carefully- connections clean?- test another card to make sure it isn;t a camera problem. Test the "bad" card in another camera... Look in card bay.. and lint etc. in there? In any case- these things are your best bet- it isn't software IMHO.

No way to recover a file that measures "0"

If you can see the images in ViewNX2, but not in CaptureNX2, then the problem is Capture NX2. The image files are not corrupted or you could not see them in View NX2, thus your SD card is not the culprit.

I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Capture NX2.

I reinstalled CaptureNX2. Same problem. JPEGS can be seen in ViewNX2 and CaptureNX2, so I doubt that the card is corrupted. However, I will reformat the card as a test.

I should restate that that I'm having the problem with 2 SD cards. It isn't likely that both are corrupted.

Download the latest versions, View NX-i, Capture NX-D. I would be surprised if this doesn't solve your problem. Media problem seems a remote possibility to me.

No... You mentioned file sizes at Zero. That is an unusual issue- as no matter if you have the correct software or not, file size is viewable. Reformatting is always recommended- but now does not sound like your issue.

I downloaded View NX-I and Capture NX-D. Problem solved. Apparently Nikon made Capture NX2 useless for NEF. To those of you who showed an interest in my difficulty, thanks.
