Today is a memory day for me, as it would have been my parents 86th wedding anniversary. I'm wondering how many people have really old photographs. I am fortunate that I was a late in life child and my parents passed down valuable photos. The earliest is I have is an old Tin Type photo of my grandfather's brother born in 1859. If you have old photos I'd love for you to share them.

The picture of your dad when he was six is so beautifully formal and his expression is so self-contained. The photographer was very talented.

I reworked this one for my brother as this is the man he was named after.

Thank you, I was extremely close to my dad and the only one of 4 kids that looked like him. My two sisters and brother resembled my mother.

Very nice. I fear, in today's "Throw Away Society" that many old treasures may be lost. I was fortunate to be reared by parents who should have been my grandparents. My father was born in Chicago in 1901, lived through prohibition, the depression and lived to prosper later in life. He taught me very valuable lessons which I try today to pass on to my own children and grandchildren. We owe our existence to the past.. it should be cherished, in my humble opinion.
Hubby and I were talking about the progress of the world today and we got on the subject of computers and how the beautiful art of Penmanship has gone by the wayside for the most part. I have a cherished letter, hand written by a MAN, in the most beautiful calligraphy script, in 1872 to my Dad's Aunt Tilly. So amazing to know a simple farmer had that talent. But back then it was taught in school. I'm rambling.. but it is a day of memories for me.... thank you to all who view this for allowing me these moments...

There are, in the family, diaries that my grandfather kept. Unfortunately, they are a bone of contention and possession now equates to ownership. His handwriting was a lot like that. It would be nice if each grandchild got to keep the diary where his/her birth is noted. Ah, families...

forbescat, I can totally agree and family dynamics can be complicated at best. We had one such person in our family who dedicated his adult life to our family history exploration, but would never share it. A great tragedy as he destroyed everything just before his death, for whatever reason, no one knows. So much history lost..

It's a shame that today's youth doesn't know or appreciate all the beauty that is around them. My family is from Germany....and I know nothing of why and how they came to America. My Grandmother on my Father's side....made dolls with my hair on them.....I would give anything just to have one of them.....they were either thrown away or given away, so sad!

Hi DB, I have tintypes of my great grandfather and his brother when they fought in the Civil War. I also have pictures of my grandfather when he was 2 taken in 1874. My favorite though is one of my dad taken around 1913. It is in the most beautiful oval, bubble glass frame I have ever seen. I will try to get them on here soon so you can see them. My grandmother who died in 1981 at age 99 kept everything and I was the only one in the family that wanted them so I was very fortunate in getting them. Thanks for sharing your family pictures. I like you am a very lucky person.
