Can anyone tell me what it is called when you see a black and white photo that has just part of the picture with color, say like a flower in a bouquet or a flower in someones hair? I have a dinosaur version of photoshop (#7). Can i do it on that software or is there something free out there that i can accomplish the same results?

Thanks,
Terri

It's called selective colouring.

Version 7 will work. You need two layer with the same photo on them. On one layer turn your saturation to zero to make everything black & white. Put a layer mask on this layer and do a Ctrl-click on the mask. That selects the whole frame. Choose a black brush and paint back in the areas you want in color. If you go too far changing the brush color to white will allow you to turn painted areas back to black & white. Merge the layers when done and "Save As" a different file name. Have fun! :)

Another quick option is to open your photo in phootoshop 7. Using one of the selection tools select the part you want to keep in color. Then go to "select" at the top and click on inverse. This will protect your selection. You can then go to enhance and choose convert to b/w. Hope 7 has the convert to b/w.

I use the new Topaz B&W and Other. It is new and intro price with code is $30. I did one quickly. Converted to B/W then used erase, which is edge limiting to make your life easy. That erase removes the B/W action on the flower and WaLa, color that was there to begin with. The photo was typical lush green Florida with yellow flowers. The B/W and Other turned it to all Sepia, then I used the erase on flowers and they returned to yellow of the original shot.

Yes, everyone Photoshop will do that, but why should I bother when I have a magic algorithm to do that labor in 5 minutes.

Download a 30 day and give it a try. Topaz Labs, watch the Webinar and they give you a price reduction code. No, I do not work for Topaz, but Topaz certainly works for me! Topaz plugins work in PS, PSE, Corel PSP, and others.

There are several ways to get the color/BW effect.

Here is a link to a free program that will let you do it very easily:

Eye Eye Mr Wilson (Are you the basketball- Wilson - in the Tom Hanks Movie? Castaway.) Did I miss something or am I right that the program is only free for 20 day trial. However, the program looks very interesting and I will test it. The standalone if $5 the plugin $20, but does "the plugin" have other plugins beyond the coloring program??

The Nikon 5100 has an "effects" shooting mode that lets you do this when shooting. They call it "selective color".

I haven't tried it yet but it appears pretty simple to use. They show some fun examples.

Very good Tutorial Billybob. The advantage of Topaz is that it has boundary detect. No fine work needed, it just goes to transition point and stops. But the way in the tutorial is great and clearly shown. Thanks.

It was free when I downloaded it at the beginning of the year. I just tried it and I can still use it. Maybe the new download has a new fee structure.

There's a program I used to use that was much better, but it was on a different computer and I can't locate it now. Sorry.

Most people associate me with the "MisterWilson" of Dennis the Menace fame, as the ornery neighbor.

But, the "Wilson" of the Castaway movie is okay with me too -- just floating my way through cyberspace.

Well, Mr Wilson, not unusual at all for free to become pay. I belong to "give away of the day" from time to time some are hi $ programs are for free for 24 hours. Many not worth a hoot. But, well worth subscribing to so that every morning at about 5:30 AM E time, an email is in your box. Users evaluate and comment on the programs.

There are still a lot of freebees out there or real bargains. Perhaps we should have a forum category for them.

I am glad to see this subject here today. I have wondered about how to do that, and always forget to ask when I have the opportunity.

I do not have any of the programs mentioned but I do have PSPX2 so I thought I would investigate it and I found iI can do it also. Very Simple! THANK YOU for alerting me of this subject.
