With nothing else to do except hide in the house from several days of heat and humidity, I got bored and my brother and I decided to go the the event at the Massey Airdrome in Massey, MD. As an open fly-in it was pretty much a bust. Discussing the recent heat wave with a lady that flew in with her husband, she said that even at 2000-3000 feet it was still hot, and there was another similar event in VA also yesterday; both of which probably held down the number of planes.

No matter, it was an escape; we got some plane photos and an excuse after a few hours to escape to an air conditioned place for burgers and a beer .

Except for the low pass the shots have not been edited (yet).

Thank you for looking, Karen. It was an interesting day, but everybody there baked. I think your part of the country got the heat a couple of days ago.

If I end up hiding in the house today, I'll PP some more and post them.

Thanks for looking and commenting! I knew those old radial engines were loud, but I didn't realize just how loud a 19 cylinder would be at 40-50'; it didn't quite rattle my teeth, but I was sure glad I wasn't wearing my hearing aid. It seem amazing that we didn't hear much about deafness in the WW I pilots; they must have worn some type of ear protectors.

Stinson222,

Don't mind your posting at all. Thank you for looking and posting your picture. There was a Stinson airplane made in the '30's up until during the war years. It was a much larger than the iconic Piper Cub, and I think was partly aluminum with considerably more engine. Any relationship? Picture attached.

Jim, I'm glad you enjoyed them. The old planes bring back memories; 20+ years ago I used to build, fly, (occasionally crash) & repair R/C model planes, -- mostly tail draggers; they were more fun to fly so I try to go to local fly-ins whenever I can.

Actually YES,, that is a Stinson 108-3,, with a 165 hp Franklin engine from the factory anyway,, probably from around 1948. I owned a 1947 108-1, which has a smaller tail and a 150 hp Franklin engine.
And thus,, my monikor,, :)

There was another one, same maroon color, at the fly-in on Sat. but it was sitting in what looked like a hanger for repair work. I didn't see any exterior damage, but it had a pan collecting oil under the engine. I should have noted the tail number and checked it against the picture I posted, but that's a "woulda, shoulda, couda" after thought.

Just in case you'd like one to hang in your home that is sure to start conversations , here's another picture taken that same day. I have no clue who the young lady may be; she was there with a boyfriend (?) and asked him to take a picture; not being one to pass up an opportunity, even though I'm old enough to be her father, I clicked too !
