I am going to Amsterdam in Sept/Oct and am wondering what suggestions the UHH community has for photo opportunities.
I understand the "red light" district is non photo friendly.
I am staying in Zandvoort on the coast...15 miles from Amsterdam.

Zandvoort itself has some fantastic photo-ops.
In Sep/Oct you will possibly get some real stormy days: those are the days to get your photos on the beach and of the surf. Don't know if the beach-chairs are still rented there, but there can be some neat patterns of the rows of chairs. The dunes as well, are great to photograph, but stick to the allowed paths. The dunes are protected and not "free range".
If you're taking the train from Zandvoort to Amsterdam, as soon as you step out of the Centraal Station, you're photo ops are in front of you. The front entrance/exit of the station will take you into the city, but try the back of the station too!
In front of the station is a tourist information centre (Look for the letters "VVV") where you can likely obtain a map of the area with the important spots marked.
Other than that: Have your camera at the ready at all times!

Take a canal tour both day & night versions. The Skinny Bridge. Heineken beer factory. The Madurodam (sp?) is Amsterdam in miniature with moving vehicles, airplanes, & boats. The whole country is very photogenic.

Madurodam is a delight, especially for children, with the moving trains, ships, airplanes, etc. And everything built perfectly to scale.
However, it is in The Hague, not in Amsterdam. I don't know how far it would be from the railway station, as the only times I've been there was by car. Again, the VVV can give you information on that.

You're correct. I forgot about it being in The Hague. It's been 42 years since I was there and that was on my honeymoon. Seems to me it was less than an hour by car.

There are stacks of photo opps in Amsterdam, it can be very busy though with other tourists so dont take a tripod.
When wandering around keep you eyes peeled for cyclists, there are thousands of them, the have their own traffic lanes so dont step onto them, as you will soon know about it. Time permitting try to vist other towns as Dutch towns and villages are very attractive.

Just thinking about this too: You could easily spend your entire vacation in the city of Amsterdam itself and still not have enough time to take photos of everything you see.
But, if you feel comfortable driving in The Netherlands, it might be worthwhile to rent a car for a day, or even half a day, and visit some of the smaller towns north and northwest of Amsterdam. If you do, get a road map, ignore the main roads and select the back roads. And preferably also have a dictionary handy!
For example, my brother-in-law took up on a tour of the Province of North Holland, only crossing the main roads here and there, otherwise staying on the back roads. There was one spot, (I don't have my photos here, so can't look it up and don't remember what town it was), where we walked around a bit. A very narrow street (too narrow for a car) had a sign on the corner: "Verboden voor hondekarren" (No dogcarts allowed). The building it was on was at least several hundred years old. Of course, there are no dogcarts in Holland now, but it was a neat bit of history.
Cobble stones are less common now, but can still be found (if you're not used to them, stay away from them when it's raining, they are very slippery! And don't ask how I found out, I wasn't even driving, but riding my bike!)
