This is not for me...I use Faststone. But I need advice to tell my girlfriend what organizer to use....it has to be VERY SIMPLE. She doesn't know much about computers. She is not a photographer & she just needs someplace to put her "snapshots". She has Win10.
Very simple would be to not use an organizer at all.
She could just create a folder for each date or event and stash them in the main picture folder.
Even VERY SIMPLE requires user input. No program will recognize a flower from a dog from a building. It's very easy to file photos by Date- Range, but even then, it might be helpful to add Location and subject matter. Hell, the Win 10 Folders should be enough .... in fact there's probably already a My Photos folder. Beneath that she can create whatever structure works best for her.

There is a "Photo" folder but the problem is neither of us can figure out how to add an album (as they call it). There is a plus sign, which I thought would add a new album (folder)...but nothing happens when I click on it.

Yup, I just keep them in subject folders, by Year-Month if more than one visit.

Can I just make a folder om the desktop to put the pics in?

I have always recommended not to put more on the desktop than is necessary, but if she doesn't use the PC much, then a "pics" folder on the desktop should be helpful to her.
Let me add, should she get to the point where she knows how to get the photos off her phone and onto the PC, she should understand folder structure well enough to make her more comfortable.

Probably, but I would go about it slightly different since I've been using computers since DOS 1.x. (Old, aren't I.)
Are you familiar with Windows Explorer for looking at directories (folders) on your computer? I created a PHOTOS directory under the root directory. (I clicked on the root (c:) and clicked "new Folder" and created PHOTOS. Then clicked on PHOTOS and made new folders under PHOTOS, and so forth (Pic 1).
I then clicked on the PHOTOS folder, then right-clicked and dragged it to the desk top, saying create shortcut here, and re-named the short-cut (as opposed to the photo directory on the desk-top.) (pic 2).
I hope I didn't confuse you.
Please remember, this works for me.

I too hate a cluttered desk top, and wholeheartedly agree about understanding directory (folder) structures.

If she is not doing a lot of photos just create a desktop foler named photo's and the sort and name them and put them in subfolders. That way you save money and the hassle of learning a product such as light room which I use.

Maybe Longshadow can walk you through this one. I haven't even looked at Windows 10 and I only near my wife's laptoo that has Win 8 with a cross and holy water. Microsoft didn't so anyone any favore with either one of these operating systems since they took a structure that was fairly simple and unnecessarily complicated it. It baffles me how Win 8 does things also.

Sorry, I'm not doing Windows 10 until I replace a box (computer).
(That's why I'm staying with 7 on all three boxes as long as I can.)
I don't know what an "album" is, compared to a folder... folders work well for me, so I don't bother with things I don't need (Windows puts a lot of stuff you don't
need in their operating system.).

I totally understand. I will hang on to Win 7 until something takes out the computer.
When my other half first got her Win 8 laptop, I was trying to set some things up for her and a dialogue box popped up from Microsoft asking if I would do a survey. After trying to do something simple like transfer files from an SD card to the computer and marveling at how unecessarily complicated the process had become, I completely blasted them with what I didn't like and why.
I'm sure that there have been others with similiar complaints, several months later Win 10 was released.

You're spot on about the cross and holy water and Windows 8. Perhaps update it to Win10 (accessibility related free upgrades still available, and anyone using 8 should qualify as disabled 😀), or if you're uncomfortable with that, buy a cheap copy of Windows 7? That would definitely be an upgrade and might simplify/improve your computing experience.

I will muddle through if absolutely necessary but I usually pawn the task off on one of my sons.
