I have a 5Diii that I bought used. Camera seems to work well. I have used a Canon 100-400 ii with it and it also works well. Today I put a Canon 1.4 TC iii with the 100-400 ii and it will not autofocus. I tried putting the TC on the lens first and then on the camera first. Neither worked.
I put the same TC and lens on a 7Dii and it works fine. The TC and lens seem to be working fine.
I then put a Canon 1.4 TC ii on the lens and5Diii and that also did not work. I also cleaned the camera contacts.
The camera was newly purchased from B&H in March,2016.
Any thoughts? The camera is rated to focus to F8 so the combo is listed in the manual as compatible.

I believe there was a firmware update to allow AF at f8 for the 5D III .......?

I think the 5D may only auto focus at F5.6 and large aperture. If I read correctly your lens has a max aperture of F5.6, which becomes F8.0 with the converter. On some cameras only the center, single point A/s sensor works at F8.0 and above.

I will check the firmware. I have 1.1.3. Do not know when it was updated.

The 5diii is supposed to autofocus to F8 with the center sensor. Obviously mine does not so.....

That maybe it. I see, via Google, that 1.3.3 is the current version so hopefully that is it. Thank you for everyone's thoughts.

I believe 1.2.3 update allows the utilization of F8 center point. The newest version 1.3.3 addresses smaller issues such as autofocus with some wide angle lenses and some menus.

I have the same setup 5DIII, 100-400L 1.4 III telecoverter, and I just finished calibrating them. Mine does autofocus at f/8 with the center focus. Is the autofocus not working period? Hate to ask, but the switch on the lens is set to AF and not MF?

Thanks to everyone for their replys. I think my firmware needs updated. I made a bad assumption; I thought a camera that was purchased new in March of '15 would have the latest firmware. Wrong. Well, at least a simple and cheap fix.
I will try to get the download today and then try calibrating the TC/100-400 combo this week end.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think it is my firmware that needs updated. When you calibrated your set up, what microadjustment did you have to make at the zoom?

That's going to be independent to the lens and camera if I'm not mistaken. Someone elses AFMA most likely won't work with the next persons.

You are right about each camera/ lens combo being unique but I was just curious.

Just a quick note. If you're ever considering using Magic Lantern, stop at 1.2.3 (which will autofocus fine at f8 with the 100-400 +1.4 EX) as 1.3.3 isn't supported by ML on the 5D3. There are a few small changes in 1.3.3, but they weren't enough for me to preclude the use of ML, which has a host of useful features.
