I'm just not sure....I have ordered the Tamron 28-300 F3.5-6.3 for my Canon 6D; it should arrive tomorrow via the Big BrownTruck. The lens that I have used most of the time is the Canon L EF 24-105 F4. I ordered the Tamron to replace the Canon lens. To be sure, due to my limited financial status and retirement situation, I saved several months in order to be able to afford the new lens. I had hoped to sell the Canon lens in order to partially defray the cost of the Tammy. I have loved the Canon lens but my hope is that the new Tammy, due to its longer reach, will assist in reducing lens changes as situations dictate. I have several other L lenses and use them all for limited applications. The two lenses may be redundant. Therefore, at the risk of tying up my financial funds needlessly, I need someone to talk me into keeping the L lens or to give me some advice toward selling it. Sounds childish I know, but at age 67 I may be regressing into my second childhood. Thanks in advance for any responses. Dan

I would not do anything until you are satisfied with the results from the Tamron. Then if it meets your criteria, then maybe put the lens on Ebay.

I've got a feeling that your apprehension indicates that you're unsure whether you really want the Tamron. I would refuse delivery and rent one first rather than be on the line for $850. Or is less lens changing worth your expenditure? Best wishes!

One of the first lenses I purchased was a Tammy 18-200 lens. Of course I was using it on a crop camera. Then I got a 24-105 L and it's still on the camera. While the Tammy took good pictures, the L glass replaced them with great pictures. Definitely keep the Canon L.

The other glass was not described. That would be a big game changer in my mind.

The other L lenses are: 70-200 F4 IS, 100 F2.8 macro, 17-40 f4 plus several other non L lenses. Thanks

On my 6D I use mostly the 24-105L or my 100-400 L (original version). I'm saving for an ultra-wide lens for it. I prefer quality images over convenience of changing lenses.

Hey Dan,
I am entering into the same situation. Today I am expecting a Tamron 18-270. I too am hoping it will reduce the constant lens changing I have done in the past. I am retired and saved my money to buy this lens. No remorse yet, just anticipation. We should compare notes later.

There's no rush to sell the Canon lens. Wait at least a couple of weeks till you've used the Tamron and know what it can do. I've been in a similar situation where I hesitated to sell something because I thought I needed it. Once it was sold, and I had the money, those doubts were gone.

The Tamron will get the job done, and with more reach. If you go into this looking for faults in the Tamron, you're sure to find them. Use it with a positive attitude, and you'll like both the lens and the money you'll get a week later from selling the Canon lens on ebay.

You'll probably get $450-$550 for the Canon lens if you sell it on ebay.

It would seem that those three lenses would be enough.

I feel your pain! LOL! Have you thought about an extender for the 70-200? I don't know that I'd do a 2X,but the 1.4 would have you shooting at 5.6 and 280mm. Easier to sell and with less loss perhaps.

I've played many "angles" the last couple years and maybe the best lesson is that "we want what we want" and common sense takes second chair. I'm your age, retired and got into this hobby,at my wife's encouragement, about 3 years ago. I could do quite nicely with 6 less lenses, one tripod less and 2 fewer cameras and a lot of other must haves.

Dave.

Yes, I realize that you want less lens changing, just factor in the importance to you vs $$.

I'm not familiar with either lens but I would definitely test your new lens to be sure you really like it before selling your real Canon lens. If you were say swapping two Canon lenses I would not be so concerned. I personally have nearly always stayed with my camera's brand for lenses.

Big difference there, both in length and speed, I would definitely keep the Canon until I was very sure I would not use it, personally I don't find a need for very long lenses any more so telling you you don't need 300mm is not in my play book, no recent use but even my 17-70 Sigma gets heavy, in fact yesterday I spent the whole day with a 24mm f2.8, so light and quick and unobtrusive, did carry a 40mm but did not mount it. JMHO YMMV, Bob. BTW just about same age.

If purchased new from B&H it can be returned at no cost, provided, of course, it is in unused appearance. I just returned a $1500 Sony RX10M3 for an immediate refund after 21 days of use. Their customer service and return policy is amazing and definitely leaves me as a future purchaser.

It's simple.

Gear doesn't equal happiness.

If you look to gear to fulfill your inner happiness, you will run this treadmill forever. I don't know if you noticed this but the gear buying thing goes like this:

1.) You are unsatisfied with whatever you have.
2.) You begin to check out what other gear would be "better"
3.) You zero in on something that you want.
4.) You save and save.
5.) You buy the said piece of gear.
6.) You have that initial rush of happiness that new gear brings.
7.) You start to get those unfulfilled feelings again.
8.) The cycle starts over at step 1.
