Hello there!!!
I am also new to photography!!!
I have always loved pictures and photography; however life took me in a different direction. My real job is a choir director at a middle school!!!
Just recently have I taken my love for photography back!!!
I want my business to grow and for me to grow as a photographer.
Right now, I am shooting with a basic Nikon for dummies ;)
(Nikon Coolpix L110)
I really would love to purchase an SLR camera...whatever that means...What do the letters stand for? I know its a fully manual camera.....but i don't know what the letter mean ;)

I would love some feed back on my photos, thanks!!! Be nice please! But also be honest

Hello - really like your black & whites. I have kinda have playing around with the same lately - I seem to have a hard time getting a good tonal range. I'll be watching to see what else you have been up to.

SLR = single lens reflex. Which at least has the promise of giving you better pictures for several reasons, better glass {a quality lens}, a bigger computer process ship and a whole lots of options, whistles, and bells. But as many will tell you the very best thing is to have a love, a passion for photography - and the knowledge to avail yourself of whatever equipment you use.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

As already pointed out by notnoBuddha, SLR means single lens reflex and DSLR means digital single lens reflex. With a dslr you look directly through the lens to take your photo, as opposed to a point and shoot where you point the camera and shoot. With a dslr you can also change lenses. Just about any kind of lens will work with a dslr, from macro lenses (close-up) to extreme wide-angle (fish eye). If you are serious about photography you will need a dslr to enable you to maximize your creativity. It's also fun to set your own aperture, shutter speed, and ISO as you compose your shot.

I am familiar with Nikons, having used them for almost 40 years. Perhaps you can find a used D300. There are some available. It's a professional level camera that will enable to do all kinds of things.

Good luck with your photography. It will give you countless hours of enjoyment and years of memories. :)

Don't put down your point + shoot. After I lost my d-100 dslr to a pawnshop  I shoot with a nikon l22 p+s. You can get excellant results with any camera. First of all its the photographer and whats between his/her ears that create excellant photographs not the camera body. Increase your knowledge. There are many good introduction to photography books. One of the best I found is put out by National Geographic. written by their photographers "the ultimate field guide to photography. also subbscribe to popular photography and if you are interested in land scapes outdoor photography. If you really get into photography you may consider signing up for the New York Institute of PHotography correspondence course. I just did they take monthly payments and hava an excellant reputation. and also just because it is a slr or dslr does not mean its a manual camera. Unless it is an slr from the 60's like a nikon f almost all slrs and all dslrs have automatic settings. But they all will give you an option for total manual control. I have attached three of my photos all shot with a point and shoot
