I have a sony a6000 with 16-50 and 50-210 and am looking for something sharper. I have looked at the sony 35 1.8, the sigma 30 1.4, and the sony 18-105g. am I on the right track? I am looking at spending $500 or less. I shoot mainly outdoors in bright sunlight.

Try the Sigma 19, 30, and 60mm f2.8's - about $200 each - very sharp !

Want to sell the 50-210mm? My Sony A6000 w/16-50mm arrives this week. I'm sure I'll want something sharper, when the budget isn't tapped out. Until then...........

The 60mm prime, already recommended in a previous thread is an excellent choice. I would also consider buying the 35mm prime lens. That lens won't let you down, and a favorite to many photographers, including me. Nikon has a great 60mm prime with excellent results. Results should be the same on the Sony a6000.

The Sony 28mm f2 is an excellent lens with great sharpness. I leave mine on the a6300 all the time,it's my goto lense.

50 1.8. E-mount. $300 or less if on sale. One of the sharpest you can buy for the a6000

I have been down this road. I started with the Sony 16-50 and 55-210 kit and found them plenty sharp but the split at 50-55 mm is annoying. However, the main reason I stepped up to the A6000 from ten years of satisfaction and success with good compacts was to have something that would give me some DoF control and decent bukkah, so my first purchase was the Sony 35mm f1.8. I would really recommend making a fast ‘normal’ lens your next purchase if you want to develop your skills. I have added a bunch of lenses to my bag since, but this is the one I try to use most for general outdoor use if only for the discipline it imposes. I’m not a pixel peeper so I can’t say I notice any great difference in sharpness in any of my lenses when viewed at normal size on a computer screen. The one exception, is an old manual Nikkor 55mm F3.5 Micro P Auto that I picked up on line for $35. I have only used it for a couple of test shots, but it is WOW ‘ouch’ sharp. 55mm is not a great length for what I shoot, but it is the best I have for close-up work especially when mounted on a tripod. If you just want sharpness for the sake of sharpness its worth tracking down a nice clean one.
In hindsight, if I were to start again from scratch with a body only A6000 the first three lenses I would go for (in order of purchase) - 1 - The Sony 18-105 f4.0 G (just got it last week – really nice but big); 2 - The Sony 35mm f1.8; 3 – Rokinon 12 mm f2.0 . However I still keep my Pannie LF-1 P&S to carry in my pants pocket.

I see many posts where people recommend lenses with different focal lengths. It seems to me that any given focal length is appropriate for different subject distance ranges. So is there a place to read about generalized subject distances and best focal lengths?

I think I would look at either nikon or cannon's advertising literature on lenses. they indicate what lens is best for what. at least they used to...

Another vote for the 18-105 "G" lens. You will never want to take it off the camera!!!

I agree. My walk-around lens is the 18-200, but I also have and like the 50, 1.8. I considered the 35mm 1.8 but the 50 is a tad sharper.

My a6300 came with the kit lens. I've moved it to my a6000. I was hoping to have the two bodies sharing all the lenses, but I've had some expenditures that mean I might have to sell the a6000. Too bad as it is a great little camera.

Have an a6000 and a7ii so don't really need another one, but that a6300 is really sweet.
