succulent flowers

these flowers are only 1/8" wide and look dull grey when you are looking at the plant.but upon closer inspection..... plus a small weed flower 1/2" wide.tom

The last one really does it for me. Beautiful. Nicely in focus, too. What lens, etc.?

i used a nikon d5100 and sigma 50mm macro lens,handheld,pop up flash.tom

Thanks for your fast response. I was just returning to the post to say never mind , because I saw you had photographs of your set up at another thread. BTW I had noticed references to 100+ mm macro lenses and I wondered about their advantages over my macro which is 50 mm.

The biggest advantage is Working Distance (space between lens front element and subject). Lighting is critical for macro, so avoiding your own shadow is easier with a longer WD. A quick way to calculate WD is multiply lens focal length by 1.5. My 105-mm macro lens at Minimum Focusing Distance (MFD) has a WD of about 157-mm = 6.2-inches.
