You "COULD" use some 120 grit sandpaper, but I suppose that might be overkill....:-(

So I got some free sticker gum and paper when I remote-bought a used 60mm micro D AF lens. The barrel's flat surfaces and a non-flat ring exterior are contaminated but at least I know the seller's inventory number.

I'm looking to UHH for advice on how to get the rest of this generic sticker off of the lens so that the result is as if the label had never been there.

I could have returned the lens but I feel responsible to a well-crafted item. My goals are to not scuff or otherwise degrade the finish while getting the adhesive all off so the lens looks and feels (to my fingertips) as it should.

forjava,
I regularly have this problem with items I have bought-- CDs, etc where the sticky label is hard to remove and when you have removed it, a sticky residue is left.I have found that you don't use substances such as turpentine or alcohol, or petrol. Dish washing liquid will be useless.I have found that oil of lavender ( or oil of rosemary or eucalyptus) to be a perfect solution. This removes the gum but does not damage surfaces .I use it in my violin varnishes, but it could be bought from a chemist etc.Good luck.

Sledge hammer does a thorough job, too. How about a vice, dynamite, steam roller, etc.?

Never tried this, but dating back over forty years ago my mother advised me to use Mayonnaise for this purpose (tips from Heloise I do believe). It appears that many oil based compounds will work.

Hang on, you're saying that when you were dating, over forty years ago, your mother advised you to use Mayonnaise?

For what purpose?

Must have been a shortage of KY jelly!

Gently remove what you can with a fingernail, then moisten an old wash cloth or similar rag with lighter fluid and rub. I use that to remove old JCII stickers, labels off of glass jars, plastic bottles, etc. An old tee shirt also works well. May take several applications, depending on how gummy the label is. Use a clean part of the rag each time. Simplest way I know.

I clean lenses often with a "Johnson Flush". In your case you don't want to use the flush method, but rather a cotton rag with Johnson lighter fluid in a circular, slow movement. Don't put a soaking amount on, but a little at a time and confined to only the area with stickum on it.

I currently have three cans of Johnson lighter fluid on my bench, and I don't smoke, nor do I have a real cigarette lighter except for a little brass Bronica job as a novelty.

Lighter fluid is found at all stores with a cigarette section. Johnson is usually the brand.
