Sizes of pictures for photo contest?

Hello all, probably a dumb question but, if I enter the photo contest, no matter what size I make the picture it always comes out small in the contest, whereas I see other big and beautiful entries. How can I make my entry a larger size?

hiya... if your pix is a large file, it can be printed any number of sizes.. just make sure youre not printing a thumbnail view. but be sure you capture your pix in a large file size so you have the option to print large and maintain excellent detail. 8-10 MB is usually ok for up to 8x10. check your photo software and see what its capabilities are. best.. rich

Are you asking about the photo contest on this site??
If so, when you enter your photo check the box you'll find that says 'save original file'. That makes the larger version available for us to view.
If your photo is large and you resize to the 800X600 size that this site works best with, and you 'save the original' file, that's what will show. If you use your larger photo and 'save original' this site will resize it for you, but the larger original will be available for us to view.
It just takes practice and patience to learn how to navigate this site, but it isn't too hard..... not rocket science .. thank goodness!!! :)

You say you resize... can you give us details as to exactly what you do? Do you change the DPI setting? Do you change the X and Y pixel count? Do you change the X and Y photo size?

Hello thanks for the answer. I usually make it a 300 dpi and enlarge the picture to perhaps 20 x 15 or what ever but not matter how big I make it it never comes out big in the photo contest?

Next question, 20x15 WHAT??? Inches, feet, cucumbers? If I'm correct you are referring to inches and if so, do you "re-sample" the image?

What size print are you entering? Most entries around here are now 11x14; I think they show better than 8x10's, but there are still a number of them too.

There are basically two sizes. The real size==whatever you make it==and then the web/email size which is usually something like 5x7x 72-90dpi. For contests not on this Forum, you are being judged on the web size image--even if they let you upload a real size, they will knock it down. On the Hog, you can upload the real size and it will be available for readers.
I once won a contest on the web for an amazing photograph I took of the San Francisco harbor. But when I tried to print it for my wall, the most I could get was an 8x10 because the small sensor in the Canon G12 just fell apart beyond that. So even though it looked great at web size, in the real world where I print 20x30 regularly, no joy.

another thought... always shoot a larger file or raw large if youre going to want to make big prints... you can always down scale them.. and with massive M/GB memory cards very affordable.. and hard drives likewise, you wont regret a way too small image.. :)

I would recommend that you change the pixel count and pay no attention to print sizing. Pixel count deals with digital viewing whereas print sizing deals with the printed photo. A nice monitor filling photo will have a pixel count of approximately 1024x768 on regular screen and 1920x1080 on a wide screen. Your originals should be more than this so you will always be downsizing. It is not recommended to up-size in any substantial increments.
