I have a bunch of prom pictures and I was wondering what would be the best lens, settings and ideas for that special picture. I have an 85 mmf1.8, 50mm f2.8 and a 70-200mmf2.8 and a 50d and 7d camera body. Any help from the People Photography section!

You are going to take some prom pictures and have some sweet lenses to work with. What is the setting? Is this a home studio set up? Outdoor photo shoot? At the dance? standing in the living room?

Best lens is dependent on not only where but how you are setting up... using a tripod? external flash/ lighting?

Once the stage is set, the benefits and disadvantages of each lens can be assessed.

I use the 85mm outdoors or in large rooms frequently because I love the quality of the photos but it does not work in my house because I cannot get the distance needed so I would be looking at the 50mm in that case. If you are at the dance and photographing the event, you need the reach of the 70-200 to get those close-ups from the sidelines but that 85mm has the aperture for the dark lighting on the dance floor without disrupting people with a flash... See... need more info...

So then I would be looking to use the 85MM personally. If that is the 70-200MM F2.8L IS Canon... I change my mind but if it is a Tamron or Sigma, I stick to my guns on the 85MM.

If it is the Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS, this lens is far too versatile to leave inside. The 85MM has the advantage of aperture and weight so you may want the 85 with you, but the 70-200 takes an awesome photo wide open and so you are not losing anything by making this the one and only for the shoot. I doubt I would use anything but that zoom.

On the other hand, if you have the Sigma or Tamron lens, then you are losing image quality and I would stick to the 85mm with the advantage of aperture, light weight, and image quality.

Hope to see some of your results. Not sure I was a big help but I have an opinion :). Please if anyone disagrees, share...

Don't disagree.

In that 5-7 time frame the light should be excellent. I like the 85mm because at f1.8 you'll create some great bokeh.
