Buying equipment from members through UHH...

I consider myself new to this topic, so I hope my inquiry is sensible (and I don't mean to offend anyone). I'm interested in knowing what strategies people use to increase the safety of buying from each other through this forum's classified section. Are there ways to help minimize the risk of fraud (that sounds so harsh)? I'd never think of trying to buy something on Craigslist by paying first and then having the person ship the items to me, but is that what happens here on the Hog when people agree to a sales transaction? If so, do people just trust each other based on their profiles and how long they have been on this forum and essentially the reputation the seller or buyer has built up on this sight? Thank you for any advise or information you might have about this.

You will notice below my avatar image on the left, that I have six (6) positive 'feedbacks'. Most of these are from selling to fellow members, or purchasing from fellow members. This is one method of evaluating fairness and integrity of Hoggers.

Oh thank you! I didn't realize that information was there. That's very helpful. Much like Ebay ratings.

I think if you posted who you were thinking about buying from you would get a lot of feedback rather quickly.

Most of us who sell or buy here use PayPal as a means of transferring funds. PayPal offers excellent protection for both the buyer and the seller.

Most of the people on UHH are pretty honest people. Like Nikonian said you can trust the members with feedback and a lot of posts.

Still use PayPal though. But rest assured the regulars here know what things are worth and wouldn't sell a bad piece.

I see that everyone who replied to this thread shows a location. That, in itself, is a very good sign. I would not buy from anyone who insists on remaining in hiding, uses a PO Box or refuses to provide a verifiable address.

I did a quick scan of PayPal. It wasn't 100% clear to me if using PayPal between two private individuals such as on this site, or on Craiglist, fully protects the transaction or not. Any idea?

A while back (maybe a year or so ago) a member posted some equipment for sale with prices and told everyone that if you were interested to send your address, he would send the equipment, when you receive it, send him the money. He just trusted that the members here were honest & I believe he sold it all. I wish I could remember that members name.

I too bought a camera from someone on this site using Paypal. Paypal now have a system whereby you can pay friends and family and it is done through the person's email. It worked for me. You contact the person through their Private Message on this site and you build up a "sort of friendship" and emails and addresses are exchanged before doing the transaction.

I would assume that you are covered in this way by PayPal, otherwise why would they send its members an e-mail advising them of this new way of payment. If you have any doubts Paypal can be contacted either by phone or e-mail to clarify any points that you are not sure about.

Oh by the way, you definitely needs the person's address for PayPal even though the payment is sent via their e-mail. Paypal then confirms payment and the Seller informs you that they have received the payment and posts you the parcel. OBVIOUSLY IF THE PERSON REFUSES TO GIVE YOU THEIR ADDRESS THEIR IS NO POINT IN CONTINUING THE PURCHASE.

As I am in the UK we discussed Postage, but in hindsight buying from the USA you are then hit with Import Duty Tax when it arrives in the UK which is not the Seller's fault.

I was later informed by a friend that this is what happens. Apparently the only way to avoid import Tax a box should have been ticked on the parcel stating that it was a gift, but it wasn't a gift, so it is best not to buy imports unless it is off Ebay or Amazon, but do check carefully before completing your purchase, as I even had a purchase on Amazon that came in from China and I was charged Import Duty and on another occasion I wasn't. I don't know how that happened.

I hope this help in coming to your decision.

Thank for the information. I'm feeling more confident about the safety of the whole process.

Customs rarely fall for the it's a gift option it is fraudulent most of the time, around 95% of chinese ebayers automatically tick that box. Even when genuine it is a battle that mostly you will lose.

With huge numbers of parcels coming into the country customs can't inspect every parcel so sometimes a higher value item might slip through.

For Ireland photography equipment under 150 euro including postage doesn't attract duty, however it is liable for VAT and if that needs collecting there is a 15 euro fee for collecting it.

Free postage can be a problem if the postage cost is not mentioned on the invoice, the shipping cost gets made up and that can be a significant figure and added to your bill.

If you buy from an American company make sure they have postage costs as a separate line item. They might sell you a guitar for $900 and free shipping to the UK but they still pay for shipping it might be $50 but if it doesnt say $850 for the guitar and $50 for the shipping. You could be required to pay duty for a $900 for the guitar plus an estimated shipping cost of $100 or more

In Ireland 22 euro is the magic number for ordering from outside europe. Below 22 euro the vat gets waived as being uneconomic to collect.

Getting 10 packets from the same chinese company in the same shipping container is liable to be noticed and get taxed. Even worse the previous shipments that were not picked up on may be noticed as well.

Incidentally when a small packet gets shipped from china it goes in a shipping container along with 1000's of other packets and the cost is shared across all those packets. When it gets to Port it is delivered free by the local postal service, it is a reciprocal arrangement between postal services and the difference gets paid out at some point. Which is why it can be cheaper to buy from china than drive to the shops.

For Europeans there is no VAT between European countries as tax is paid in the country of origin, for second hand goods between private sellers that is no tax. The channel islands are outside europe for tax purposes but ideal for ordering DVD's and CD's since they are low value items and the shipping is cheap / free and shipping times are fast (overnight to the UK and then onward with the royal mail).

which is why if you buy from tesco's online they tend to ship from Guernsey.

Anyway more to the point for a European buying from an American seller has to be an absolute bargain because after import duty and Vat you may well be better off buying within Europe.

One last tip if you buy through Amazon check the other European Amazon websites you can often find the same seller same item at a much better price. Get the google translate plugin for chrome if you don't speak the language, sometimes Amazon will translate too.

For me it is better to buy from a EuroZone country and not get hit for exchange rates. My Bank charges 1.75% to deal in sterling 0% for euro's and Amazon and Paypal tend to exchange currency at a slightly worse rate.

Britain being outside the eurozone makes me less likely to buy from there plus the postage costs tend to be high. Buying from Germany is generally good, deutche post is cheaper to Ireland than Royal Mail from the UK to Ireland (usually goods from Germany tend to go to the UK then on to Ireland). If the UK was to exit Europe it will only get more expensive to buy across borders it already costs us both more to trade with UK using sterling and a fluctuating exchange rate.
