If you have to continue to run windows, install GDX control panel. It turns off this unwanted windows 10. Works on win 7 & 8.

GDX? This is all I could find.

That is funny! I guess it's not funny to you, but it is a hint of things to come.

I went through a bit of trouble gettin Win10 installed on my older Dell, but it won't go onto my newer one. I bought a new 500GB SSD, and I plan to do a clean install on that. Assuming it will work, I'll then have to put the old drive back in and de-authorize a bunch of programs and reinstall them on the new drive.

Back in 2010 the company I was working for required all documents to be written using Microsoft Office and that is why I had my iMac running both OS (but not at the same time). Now that I am retired I would definitely convert back to the iMac because the iMac would run circles around this crappy Dell. But I have too much $$ tied up in this crappy Dell and I am too old. So I am stuck with the Dell.

Why I build my own machines, not laptops but for sure desktops, Better and cheaper.

SSD's are sooooooooooo much faster and more expensive. Once you go SSD, you won't go back to a 7,200 RPM drive.

With a clean install you should be fine, but I hear nothing but problems from the upgrade.

the problem with the standard rotating spinner drive it that eventually they will crash because the moving parts wear out - bushings, bearings, lack of lubrication, etc.

For all looking for a way to stop the forced download of Windows 10 on Windows 7 and 8,8.1 machines go here:

http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-gwx-control-panel-block-upgrading-windows-10

This page offers the download to GWX plus a step by step guide in doing so.

There was noway my wife was going to use W10 on her machine she hasn't been bothered since she followed the instructions using GWX. Good luck..

Please, elaborate more, on this GDX control panel. Thanks

GWX Control Panel is a small program that will erase Win 10 install updates on your Win 7/8 computers, prevent them from reinstalling, and remove the Win 10 popups. I've had it running on my computer for about a month and have been very satisfied.

Just Google GWX Control Panel. Install the app. Tell it what to do. You're good to go.

I currently have the same SSD in this year-old Dell. Very fast (30-40 second) boot time. I also have one in a MacBook Pro. I don't have to worry about moving it a bit when I'm using it. When I bought the Dell a little over a year ago, I could not get a machine with an SSD.

I bought the new drive because I want a clean install. If it doesn't work, I still have a good drive. If I try a clean install on my current drive, and it messes up, I'm in trouble.

You can get a 250 or 500 Gig SSD for not too much money. Your operating system will fit on there and probably all your programs. Then you can use a regular drive for the data (pictures, word processing, etc.) As long as you have enough RAM, that won't limit you much.

Just got a new computer. 250Gig SSD, 2TByte hard drive. Getting ready to add another 4TByte drive. The system works nicely, but the problem is as you use it and add things it tends to slow down because almost everything you add does something in the background.

Also remember to set restore points.

A word of caution....and Thankfully I caught it on time, I run Win 7 on all my computers and refuse to up to Win 10 (won't go into why not, to long a story) so anyway, as everyone else I keep getting the pop up reminders to upgrade and I continue to uninstall the installer (KB3035583 update file) But unless you turn off auto update window, it will return. Well this morning I turn on my monitor, (I never shut down my network) and to my surprise Windows 10 installed itself overnight... I woke to a screen asking if I was who I am and accept or decline the install...I answered No and declined... So my machine rolled back and restored my computer back to Window 7 but took an hour....so beware, they are pushing ....BYW, there is no one that uses my computer but me and I know I didn't okay the install. There is a few articals about unauthorized upgrades, so beware if your one who doesn't want Win 10.

Doug I had a similar thing happen. I was working on some photos when my machine just shut down and windows 10 started loading. I couldn't even turn off the computer, so against what the screen said I unplugged the computer. Had on start up only a blue screen. Next morning my computer came up saying that it was "Locked". The only way I could get the machine to run was to open with the message that in 59 minutes and 45 seconds Windows 10 was going to load, they had taken control of my computer. I had to finish those shots for a deadline so I did let 10 load. I should have known though, after the last Microsoft updates that every time I shut off the computer it said that I had updates to load which there were none. They now are calling Windows 10 just an update. The jury's out on Windows 10, it's so damn much slower then Windows 7. The same thing happened to my neighbor with her laptop, come morning Win 10 was on and the only way she knew how to turn off her computer was to close it and she's in health care and need to use it every day. I did show her how to turn it off. Still looking at my options .

I had the opposite experience. My Windoze 7 laptop kept bugging me to "upgrade" to Windoze 10. Micro$oft eventually wore me down to saying "Yes". After some time, it said that my laptop isn't compatible with Win 10 and can't upgrade. YESSS !!!
