Would like input on which combination is better for IQ & Autofocus on Canon 6D & 7Dmkii for sport shooting (soccer, baseball & track field) usually in decent daylight. Currently shooting inside sports with 70-200L ii 2.8 USM IS. Thanks for your input.

I've never used the Sigma or an extender so I can't help you there, but I do have both the 100-400 L II and the 70-200 f/2.8 L II. I use them on my 6D and 7DII. The 100-400 L II is outstanding. Extremely quiet and quick to focus. Nearly instantaneous actually. Image quality is on a par with the 70-200. From everything I have read, the 1.4x does little if anything to degrade performance. Plus, you could use it on the 70-200 if desired. The 100-400 focuses very close. Closer then the 70-200. I find that I use it more then the 70-200. I generally keep the 70-200 on my 6D and the 100-400 on my 7DII. Makes for a great combo.

Considering the money involved, I would look at reviews and comparisons.

I have both lenses, the Canon 1.4 III extender and both bodies and experience using them. The answer is simple, you're better off using the Canon lens on either body for shooting sports. The IQ of the Canon lens with the 1.4 xtender is comparable to or better than the Sigma and you will have no problem hand holding the Canon lens body combination as it's a couple pounds lighter than the Sigma. The Canon also focuses faster and has better image stabilization.

No one mentioned that the AF goes south on the 6D with the extender.

However the 100-400 works fine on the 6D without the extender. Of course on the 7DII AF works with the extender. In fact I bought the 1.4X just for that lens on my 7DII. Well the mkI actually, maybe one day I will trade my Mk I and Tamron 150-600 in and get the 100-400 mkII. Or not, I often wish I had two 100-400s so my 6D and 7DII could have it at the same time.
My Tamron 150-600 does just about as well as the 100-400 when the light is really good and of course it has the 200 mm extra reach. But when the light is iffy I find the 100-400 images better, even when cropped to equal the 600s reach.
I have read that the Sigma Sport is a bit better than the Tamron or Sigma Contemporary but is it enough better to justify the weight and size difference?
I can hand hold the Tamron 150-600 but usually use it on a tripod with gimbal head. The 100-400 I hand hold with a pistol grip screwed onto the tripod mount. I have a strong feeling that the Sigma Sport would be a tripod only deal in most cases for me and most others who aren't young & fit or working out to keep upper body and arm strength up.

Yes I was aware I would loose AF with 6D & 1.4x, but not with 7Dmii Single Point AF. You are confirming what I have researched & appreciate your input.

LFingar, I have been reading your posts for many Canon body/lens questions, appreciate your feedback & experience. Now I need to save a little more $$ for Canon set. Thank you

Thanks for the information especially since you have the combinations I am considering. Leaning towards Canon set & will be purchasing for spring/summer sport season coming soon. Thank you again.

I have the Sigma 150-600 Sport and it is an incredible lens yet big. It needs support unless your perhaps the hulk. It is well built and smooth cost comparison to the Cannon lenses is a good buy for my budget. I have used mine for wildlife and it does very well. It is my first non Canon lens and I am very happy with it. I would advise going to a local camera store and trying on each lens to see which one fits your needs before purchasing. Where you buy your lens is your choice and your budget.

I have the 100-400 ii and would say it is the lens to get. No I have not used the Sigma. But the build quality and absolutely incredible quality of the Canon glass used in this lens is way beyond any contemporary lens in it;s class made by any one.
I had the old version and now the new one. Can't say enough good about this lens. Hyper fast focusing will focus clear into near macro range at 400mm if you want excellent closeups of a close players face you won't have to step back to be able to focus. Many people do not think of this close focusing capability until too late.

One other option: consider a Canon 300 f2.8 prime. Rent one and try it out. Fabulous and works great with 1.4 and 2x and still reasonable f stop. it is my favorite lens.

For sports/action/wildlife... I'd use the 7DII, and not the 6D.

For that purpose, the 7DII has much better AF, plus high frame rate that might be useful at times. Also, the camera's crop factor acts like a "free teleconverter", so you can use less extreme lenses.

That said, I shoot sports/action a lot. Most of the time using crop sensor cameras like 7DII, and most of the time with no more than 300mm lens. Occasionally I'll use a 300mm with a 1.4X teleconverter. I have a 500mm, but rarely use it for sports....mostly just for wildlife.

On an APS-C crop camera... 300mm is a very long telephoto, 400mm to 500mm is extremely long, and 600mm is insanely long!

For soccer, baseball and track and field, I cannot imagine ever using or needing longer than 400mm on a cropper.

So, my choice would be the 100-400mm. And I probably wouldn't bother with the 1.4X teleconverter... at least not until I'd used the lens alone for a while to see if the TC is needed.

If your subjects were wildlife... especially smaller critters and birds... the 150-600mm might be the ticket. But not for sports.
