Nikon F3 — Pin Registered by Double M

I have a 1986 Nikon F3 body with a pin-registered back on it. This body was precision modified by MM Industries with a viewfinder reticle and a device that inserts two registration pins through the sprocket holes of 35mm film.

If you work with film, and have a desire to make multiple exposures in precise registration, this is a very useful tool!

The original purpose and use of the pin registration system was to create precisely registered multiple exposures on the same frame of slide film, for multi-image programs.

The camera is in great shape, as it was always used on a copy stand of some sort, with a bellows and enlarging lens that I no longer own. It will accept a new back without the pins, if that is how you want to use it.

This camera cost $4995 new, in 1986! I'll let it go for $750.

Weren't those the days! I just came across my F2 with the same mods from MM. We made many thousands of slides with that camera i got a Marron Carrel 1400 with the full-size column almost 10' tall. The MC is history but I still have the motorized 12 field compound table.

What do I do with all the boxes of carousel trays holding the shows we made? 15 Kodak projectors, 6 AVL Doves and 5 Chief stands are long gone. So is the TEAC 3440 and Kaypro computer running Genesis.

You know, there might be a few thousand people left who know what we really did back then!

I had a ClearLight Superstar system with 5 Star 3 dissolves, the Universal Controller, the Apple //e with AMPL/M... At various times we used Ektagraphic IIE, IIIE, and Elmo projectors.

I also had a 3440, a 133B, a 124AV, and a lot of studio and road-worthy audio gear to feed them. I still use my old dbx 164 compressor-limiter and EV-RE20 mic.

I don't miss cleaning film and glass when mounting slides in Wess Mounts. Nor do I miss editing tape with razor blades!

I also have most of my old AMI Standards Guides and the show book from the 1983 AMI convention in Orlando.

What do you you do with those multi image shows you still have? Contact me! I have a 15 projector AVL based rig in my garage.

The shows and equipment are long gone. I have the F3 and a few photos of my facility, but the business was sold twice since 1996.

We used a ClearLight Superstar system. It was amazing.

Oh well. I was a slide programmer back in the day, and in recent years have been on a mission to find and restore great examples of the medium. Multi-image was largely unknown by the public even in it's heyday, and now - forget it. I have been able to assemble my multi-image rig thanks to donations by a couple of rental houses that "just wanted it out of the warehouse"!

Very recently I was given a cache of shows, ranging from 9-27 projectors. I have JUST gotten them home. Time to bake the tapes and xfer them to digital before they disintegrate!

I have been pondering creating new content for multi image shows; I think that the F3 with the MM back is the only solution out there, short of finding a Forox or Marren Carroll (sp). I tried digital-to-35mm services; unfortunately none of them use pin-registered cameras.

Best,

I checked out your website. It's a trip down memory lane!

Somewhere I have the show book from the 1983 AMI convention in Orlando. I watched 123 shows that week... flew home bleary-eyed.

We were a part of a creative services team at a yearbook/school portrait company (Delmar). We did shows for training, workshops, sales meetings...

Here are a few scenes from our work:

Great photos! E2 projectors - I am not a fan. Had to pull the proj out of the rack to change a bulb. I love the double-stacked tables as a projection tower. We used to put one row of tables behind that, as a walkway. And lots of tape...

I never made it to one of those AMI shows. Oh well... Anyway, along with all the slides I brought home this week, I was given a stack of hardware, including 4 chief stackers with E3s and Doves. Now I could theoretically run a 27 projector show... I think there's one lurking in those boxes. I'm gonna need a bigger power drop.

Can we take this conversation off the forum? You can write me via the link on my webpage. I have questions about Clearlight...

ClearLight was right up the road from us so acoarst we used their programers. They also offered while-you-wait walk-in E6 runs, very handy for emergencies.

The name ClearLight is a double entendre cuz the business was the fundraising arm of a religious community.

Yep. I was 18 when I met those guys at a Presbyterian church retreat in 1973. They ran a six projector show from some paper tape device.

The show was well done, but I was mostly enthralled with the medium. I’d made about 900 slides for a show I never got to see (community college “donor thank-you” show), earlier that year.

So I parked the memory, got my BA degree, and also worked in radio from 1973 to 1979, along with doing some (other) radio commercial production in 1978.

In ‘79, I joined Delmar as an AV producer. From ‘79 to ‘87, I made slide-tape shows, sound-filmstrips, videos, multi-image shows, and lots of photo illustrations for advertising the company.

In 1980, I went to a NAVA (later ICIA) show and shopped for gear. I reconnected with Clear Light there, and after a lot of convincing my boss, we bought a system in September of ‘81.

Our first Clear Light show was a success. Our January sales meeting 12-minute opening show had 430 people clapping for several minutes after. They hadn’t seen anything like it. I was almost in shock.

DO YOU STILL HAVE THAT 15 PROJECTOR SHOW? You need to see my garage, as it stands today. And also see my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdGRNxsrsI-efMFSjFDmzvg/videos.

I just took a small leap and bought a Double-M pin registered back. Now all I need is everything that goes around it. Can you please confirm for me that the only camera this back will mate with is a Nikon F3? Or are there other Nikon models that will do? As I will only use whatever camera I get for use with this back, it doesn't need to be "the greatest".

Thanks,
Steve

The back is custom mated with an F3HP body. Special holes are drilled into the film rails. The advance mechanism is precisely adjusted so the sprocket holes line up under the pins. A special grid “reticle” is cemented to the focusing screen so you can precisely position graphic elements within a #2 Wess Mount…
