ALC-SH113 cap on Sony SEL30M35

Please can someone explain as to the pros/cons of using this lens cap which came with my SEL30M35 sony Macro lens. I shot my very first pics with this lens yesterday and I'm just about to head into the outback(garden) for another round of same, but I"m not sure when and when not to use this rectangular slit cap. What does it do? When should I use it. Thanks for your help with this.
