Taking kids to Vail at the end of February. Do you hoggers have photo suggestions for me, while they're snowboarding? I will have a rental car, can do some traveling.

Go to Minturn, Leadville, Glenwood Canyon to Glenwood Springs.

I just got back from that area, 2nd year in a row. There are photo ops galore out there in the winter. The area around Dillon is amazing. If you get off at Frisco and go over to Swan Lake drive (or something like that). This is the road that cuts across the southern edge of Dillon Reservoir and takes you from the Brekenridge access to the Keystone/A-Basin road. There is a scenic overlook up there which is beautiful.

Other areas: Drive up to Loveland pass above A-basin. Great shots all over the place on your way to the top.

Same for Vail Pass and Hoosier Pass (above Brek).

If you want to drive a bit, go over Hoosier pass all the way down into the valley. There is an elevated area halfway between Pikes Peak and the Western Range. I got some fantastic shots there last year.

I haven't gotten further than Vail Pass going west so who knows what kind of magical shots exist out there. We were on ski trips to Copper, Keystone and A-basin. Can't afford Vail yet!!!! lol Have a great trip. It was Vermont cold last week out there so bring warm cloths.

If you hike, try a place called Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon. Signs tell you how to get to the parking area. Beautiful lake up there with a frozen waterfall in winter. There will be snow on the trail so go prepared. Also lots of good shooting in Summit County. I lived there for 20 years. Maybe try getting up to Montezuma if you get a good, clear day. Enjoy the mountains!

Check and see it there are any places to rent snowshoes and walk along the edge of some of the cross country ski trails. You should find some interesting compositions of snow and trees. Maybe find a flowing creek with ice.

IF you're going to let your snowboarding kids loose on Vail and its back-bowls without accompanying them on-skis/ with camera, try Rt. 24S toward Leadville. There are some decent photos to be had there (without driving to Glenwood Springs). Ton of snow this 2016 - seek early AM, later-PM lighting angles.

I lived in Vail for 8 years -- here are some suggestions for Vail Village:

1. If it's not buried in snow and/or ice, be sure to take the kids to the Pirate Ship park between Vail Village and Gold Peak -- it's one of a kind and a Vail icon.

2. Also, be sure to take some photos of the famous Vail Covered Bridge with your kids (and whole family) at the entrance on the parking structure side of the bridge -- it's also a Vail icon and a great place to memorize your trip with your kids.

3. Other photo op locations include the Children's Fountain Plaza, the skier statue near the Pirate Ship, the iconic Clock Tower, Bridge Street, Gramshammer's deck, Vail Chapel.

I have attached some photos that I took in late fall before the snow arrived on my last trip back with my grandkids who live in Denver to give you an idea -- I have a ton of winter shots but they are slides and I haven't gotten around to digitize them so can't show them to you.

Between Vail Village and East Vail, south side of roadway, look at the rather vertical mountainside in this area for long ice flows hanging from the mountainside. You sometimes may see climbers trying to pick their way up the face of the ice.
Also, if you have a lift ticket, go up Vail Mountain or Lionshead to the summits for some spectacular views of the Gore Range or in the case of Lionshead, look to the southwest for a long range shot of Mt. Holy Cross or down into Sundown Bowl.
While at Lionshead, you may also get some shots of tubing or climbing on the rope towers.

For something different, you might consider contacting the Concierge at a major hotel to arrange going on a dog sled outing. We've done it at several major ski areas. It's an unusual experience with a lot of beauty to photograph.

I moved to vail 7 years ago from Nyc .All above suggestions are great. Hanging lake is too dangerous in the winter. Glenwood springs is a 40 minute drive. 1-70 goes right thru the canyon. Think big walls and curves. Breathtaking. Take Minturn exit and go into this old town. The saloon is amazing. 10 min from vail. Continue on 24 Thru Minturn to experience a breathtaking but safe drive into Leadville. You'll be glad u did. Old doc holiday hangouts. He died in Glenwood. Catch the gore range at sunset. Vail facing east. Much more but that's a great start
