Shooting on city streets handheld at night?

I asked this same question in the regular group site. I was told that there was a Street Photography page sorry I did not know. Any way here I go again. I know how to do walking shots during the daylight. But I will be going to Key West in a few weeks. As the night life is what Duval Street and Mallory Square are all about I need some help. I will be using my Canon Rebel t4i and buy a new prime lens (either 28 or 35). Anyway back to my question I can not carry a monopod or tripod around with me. I will be walking down the streets myself and snapping away. What I need to know is how do I do this? What settings are best to use when going hand held at night? Also as my Rebel is a crop camera should I buy the 28mm or the 35mm. Thank you for any help you offer. I am so new to all this both photography and street stuff.

I am no expert at all but I do shoot at night handheld, using m43 cameras which have smaller sensors than yours but good in-body stabilization. I mainly use a tiny 20 prime (weighs maybe 2 oz) which is roughly like 40 if you believe in equivalency charts. I usually shoot in full manual but sometimes shutter priority at night. I adjust ISO as needed to be able to shoot but can't let my camera run wild or it will use a much higher ISO than I actually have to have. Knowing what the compromises are for your particular camera is essential. A few test runs with the lenses you mean to use will tell you a lot.

I have a street night shot posted on this section now called Night on Royal.

I shoot with a Sony RX100M4 with a setting of 24mm most of the time. For all street photography I use shutter priority and auto ISO; in low light I can easily shoot at 1/30 with no shake. If I get noise, I find that noise my B&W photos adds to the ambiance of the shot.

Looked thru your photo's ...very nice... one struck me It is a Mother in Stilettos (presumably) and daughter in Uggs and a mandolin player. The older woman has quite the look and the daughter appears she is following in her steps.

Great picture !!

My family has very good friends in Fair Haven that lived at a place called West Winds on the Navesink River. Never gave it much thought when I was a little kid, but realize now it was Mad Men money !! Great memories there.

Hi Willie, yea that mother in Stilettos... How could she walk with those things on? Can you imaging having a disagreement with this woman.....

And West Winds on the Navesink, quite a nice area to live !!

Thanks for the nice comments Willie.
