Even though your budget is a concern, keep looking at the 18-200. It is a great, all purpose lens on a 7100.

I have since moved to a full frame Nikon, but previously got excellent results with the 18-200 on my DX Nikon. If it is at all a possibility down the road budget-wise, don't necessarily hurry to jump on another lens. The 18-200 does a great job

I have mentioned this many times, the Sigma 18-250 OS macro is a very nice lens. I have a Nikon d7100 and d5100 for backup and it works well though the whole range. At around 350 bucks at B+H and Adorama it is hard to beat. It is on my camera most of the time except when I use my fisheye or telephoto lenses. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.

18-140 is sharper.

I have that lens, it was a kit lens when I bought my Nikon d40 some time back. I now use it on my d3300. Great walking around lens, pretty much stays on the camera. Occasionally use it with a 2x extender for a little extra reach, no problems.

Does anyone have experience with the Nikon 55-200mm DX VR II? I'm not really satisfied with the clarity of my 18-105mm DX. I have the 18-55 kit lens which is actually not bad. (IMHO) I've been thinking of getting the 55-200 to go with it. I've also been looking at the 18-200mm VR but it's almost 3 times at much & my budget is severely limited. If anyone has experience with these lenses or other suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them. (I'm using a D7100)

It is quite sharp and will provide excellent results. Maybe even better than the 18-200 in that same focal length range. The 18-200 was not great at 200mm. To get your best results with the 18-200 you have to stop down to F8, pretty much at all focal lengths. The 55-200 is better at F5.6,

Check out Keh.com. There are at least 8 used Nikon (Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom) lenses for sale. They might be w/i your budget parameters. I've used that lens for many years as my "go to" DX lens. I've also bought several used lenses from Keh.com and have been very satisfied w/my purchases.

No one can know what "that lens" might be. Many have been mentioned. Your post goes to the end of the list, not below the one you looked at last. You need to use quote reply to give a clue.

The 55-300mm is actually a better Lens than the 55-200mm.

In my younger days, I had a Canon F-1 will all the lens. Really got worn out carrying around a big bag with a number of lens. So made the decision to try a single lens setup to lighten my load. When I bought the Nikon D80, I used the 18-200 for a number of years and loved it. Recently upgraded to a Nikon D7200 and decided to step up to the 18-300. It is essentially the same size and weight as the 18-200 and gives more zoom. I use it as my only and walk around lens and I am happy with it. It was not a cheap decision but worth the cost of the upgrade. After all, I will travel this road of life only once and I am not getting any younger.

That lens came with my D3300. Since I don't have any Nikon telephoto lens to compare it to, it's ok for my purposes right now. I would love, to have and 18-200mm (or 300) so I could carry just one lens, but like you, it's a matter of $$$. Check out B&H used lenses. They usually have the 18-200mm VR for a reasonable price.

HTH,

Jim

Very well put, and the reason I have much more, and better gear than I know how to use.

I find the 18-105 a great walk about town lens. I have 55-300 for wildlife which is great. Did have the 55-200 but not quite long enough.

It has been mentioned several times so I guess one more time won't hurt. Very much understand budget concerns but the Nikon 18mm - 200mm VRII is one great lens. It stays on my D7100 about 90% of the time.
Try refurbished, might save a couple of bucks.

Amen. Kmgw9v, we totally agree. One these days I will learn how to use what I have, maybe.
