I don't want to unduly concern you, but if it's something like this you should have it checked out. Good luck.

I saw a news report a while back that said that getting a gold eye in the photo could indicate eye problems in the child. I'm not trying to alarm you or anything but it might be worth more of a google search on the subject. It could just be a fluke of the camera and lighting, but might try several more photos from the same camera and another one to see what the results are.

Glad to hear that all is well with him so far. I know things like that can be scary for families, especially when you notice it after some of those major news stories that happen about similar situations.

"Red eye" is just light reflected by the retina, so there are all colors in there, and it's not a pure red color (although red predominates). I'd guess there are enough other colors to push it toward white and the red element is just blown out.

Forgive me for being nosy, but what kind of doctor did she see? It should have been an ophthalmologist, not a family practitioner or optometrist.

Thanks for this link, I photographed an awards ceremony recently and there were 2 or 3 of the kids (out of around 200 ) where this kind of red eye was present.

Yes, that came to mind immediately. I bet that kind of "evidence" would generate a chuckle from an uninformed doctor, though.

Please let us know how this turns out.

I agree - the child should be evaluated by an Ophthalmologist (NOT an optometrist, pediatrician, nor a family practitioner).
Perhaps even a retinal specialist. Bring a copy of the photo as well.

Better to spend a few bucks now on the correct specialist, than find out you should have too late.
