We may be spending a week in the Port Charlotte area in mid-late January.

Would like some suggestions for some places--wildlife preserves, etc.-- to take photos of some native birds and critters that hopefully we can visited in day trips. We visited the Ollie's Pond in Port Charlotte last year, and got some good shots, but am looking to expand on that.

Thanks

You can drive about 30 - 40 minutes north on I-75 to Sarasota and visit the Myakka River State Park for a lot of wildlife and the Celery Fields for birds. http://www.myakkariver.org/ and https://www.scgov.net/parks/pages/celeryfields.aspx. Plenty of other things to find worthy of a trip to Sarasota.

Do not miss Corkscrew swamp sanctuary near Naples, for up close looks at wading birds and red shouldered hawks. Volunteers are on duty to give you help, and guided walks are available most days starting at 10:00, no extra charge other than admission. The walks are first come, first served, so arrive a little early to sign up. Call ahead to check availability. It is a 2.25 mile raised boardwalk. Ding Darling NWR on Sanibel Island, where the wintering White Pelicans are worth the trip. It is a drive through sanctuary. Venice Rookery is also nice, small and very little walking. If you do not mind taking a day trip to east coast, you will really enjoy Wakadohatchee Wetlands and Green cay in Delray Beach. They are really my favorite spots. Go online and download "Great Florida Birding Trail, south edition, for other great ideas. Have a great time, you will enjoy.

I used to visit my sister when she lived in Port Charlotte. Would take her canoe and paddle around the endless canals in the area. Endless wildlife. Snakes, birds, alligators. (often on her back yard). Just rent a boat or a canoe and have at it. Just watch out for the rattlesnakes, and the alligators. (They're the logs with big teeth!)

tnwaltz, Robert R & LFingar,

Thank you very much for your suggestions! We will definitely fit some or all of them into the schedule, if we can fit the week into our schedule... Retired folks seem to get too damn busy!

Jim

Agree 100 percent. I will be visting corkscrew again Dec 14-18. I would also suggest Little Estero.http://www.fortmyersbeachfl.gov/index.aspx?NID=194. Also http://www.fws.gov/refuge/JN_Ding_Darling/plan_your_visit/hours.html. All three are on my list.
