Database Rrecommendation

I am looking for a SIMPLE database for my wife to use to create address labels (on Avery sheets, for instance) and reports/lists. Our old MyDataBase finally quite working when I switched to Windows 8. The program dates back to '02; I was surprised it worked all the way to Win7. Can't find any current reference, so I assume it's no longer made.

I did a Google search and came up with what looked like a really nice & simple db, but it turned out the company apparently went belly up.

Any references will be appreciated.

FileMaker Pro has been around since about 1986. They are a division of Apple. Their database runs on Macs, Windows PCs, iPhones, iPads, and the Internet. They seem to update it regularly. It scales from single user to server level.

The great thing about FileMaker is that it is an incredibly powerful relational database, yet unlike Microslop Access, it is simple to get into and use.

I'm not a programmer, but in the early 2000s, I used FileMaker Pro to create a system for printing greeting cards (120,000 orders/year of 50 cards each) in four professional labs, for a major account that had 325 stores). Yet I've also used it for dozens of small projects such as mailing labels, door signs, business cards, and other trivial tasks.

Check it out and watch the video at http://www.filemaker.com .

I found it here:

http://www.avanquest.com/USA/software/mydatabase-home-and-business-106193?APOP=Transition&rs4=AQ_US_PPC_0514&gclid=COKEgLKpqckCFUiFfgodi8UAlw

Description:

It has been updated to work with Windows 8 and it should work with the archives of the databases made with the older versions. It is $39.95.

Thanks for the reference. I decided to get this since it will transfer old dbs and the learning curve may be a bit easier. However, there appears to be a problem with their website, as I tried to order and could not advance beyond the product selection screen. Based on that, I'm still wondering if they are still in business.

I did check "system requirements" and WIN8 was not listed. They had a really light weight label version that seemed simple enough to use, but no font features - one font; one color (black). Edit: under platform it showed only up to WIN7, but farther down it shows WIN8. Who knows?

I've been using the data base that is a part of Microsoft Works. Creates the fields that I want in the order, with the length that I want. Sorts and reports the way I want./ "The way I want" varies from time to time. Thus, I can add and delete fields of whatever length as I want.

What office suite are you using? MS Word has a pretty good address database built in. Also as already mentioned MS Works has a good system too. I haven't used it in a few years but Star office is free and has a word processor and database.

I've used FileMaker Pro for decades also and find it to be versatile and generous with templates if you need to pick something up without getting technical. Although they show an upgrade cost of $196, they also show a subscription option of $9 per month which I find troubling if this is the way they're headed.

I'm using an old version of Word Perfect - really old, about 13-years or so on W7. It supports Avery labels of all shapes and sizes.

The strength of FileMakerPro is that it is relational. Different databases can be referenced in each other.

I don't know if you were aware, but Avery offers software for their products. http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Templates-%26-Software/Software/Avery-Design--Print.htm

They also have a reference page to many others. http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Templates-%26-Software/Software/?Ns=Rank

Go to Avery and download their software for free. It is set up to use Avery labels of all different sizes and shapes. Even if you didn't use Avery labels, the clone brand will say "equivalent to Avery xxx" on the package cover.

That's one major advantage. There are thousands of cool features in it. I've never found anything I wanted to do with it that I couldn't.
