Hi all,
I too am new to this forum and learning alot. I have the Nikon D5000 and right now using the automatic mode for the most part. I bought the "dummies" book for the camera but find I do not learn very well from reading about it...I am more of a auditory learner. Any ideas for courses or DVD type things that you have tried.
I LOVE taking pictures!! My daughter is sick of me taking her picture. I do mainly people pictures with some landscape/artsy stuff thrown in.
Please let me know what you think!

Your wedding shot is terrific I can almost hear tango music!! The 2nd shot leaving tha apple red but everything else in black and white is very effective. You clearly have the eye for composition. You will find this site has lots of good people and some very talented photographers on it. If you are more of an auditory learner may I suggest the correspondence course fromNew York Institute of Photography. They have been around for 100 years and haave a superb reputation. Along with printed materials to learn from they send audio cd's as well as dvds. ggood luck and welcome.

I apreciate the compliment it is nice to have my work apreciated. To be honest I was scared and intimidated by some of the big guns and the quality of their work. I had joined pophoto.com in 2003 but it was only this year when I got the courage to start posting photos and comments ;-) I had mentioned on a popphoto post that my critiqueing some of the big boys work was like a minor leaguer critzing Derek Jetters swing :!: But the more experienced photographers convinced me that they like having commentary about there shots, that they want to help others and that everyones interprattion is valid.Just cause youre a newbie doesnt mean you dont have a valid point. so now I am posting more taking a running jump and cannonballing into the pool.

I also have a Nikon D5000. I recently changed from using a Fujifilm Finepix Pro S2. Lenses from the old 35 mm Nikon SLR bodies, as old as a 1968 model Nikon F, will physically fit on both, but the electronic connections on the D5000 do not recognize the lens as being there at all.

I bought a set of two DVD's on e-Bay, Nikon D5000 Made Easy, by Elite Video, version 1.0 and 2.0, copyright 2009, and found them to be useful. I think I paid around $25.00 for the set.

I have been doing photography for over 55 years now, but the D5000 called for a new education for me. Learning to use PhotoShop is the next step for me.

I too wonder about the "big guns"...don't really even understand yet what exactly they are talking about much of the time...but I will learn.
A long time ago I had a b/w manual camera and i fooled around with f-stops and shutter speeds and all that stuff but I have forgotten it....need big refresher course!!

one book sugestion. Itss from amphoto publishing. The author is bryan peterson.(my favorite photographer) Its titled " Understanding Exposure." It goes in and explains f stops and shutterspeed and iso and all that stuff in easy to understand language. Thhe goal is to show you how not only to get the technicaly correct exposure but the most creative exposures as well. It is a must have for any photographer. Im sure amazon.com would have it. :D

I really like your "pattern" shots! I love to see how some folks can see patterns in everyday situations, then get them "on film". Nice job! I've been trying to learn to see more patterns like these. Here's one I recently took in Scotland - The walls in the fields were so intriguing to me, I had to give it a try.

Hunter picking apples is a great shot!! I love the way he is looking slightly to the side - so much in thought.
